St Lawrence Hockey

Who'd of thought back in December that we'd be talking about the pairwise now? Nice game by the Saints tonight.................keep it up and the pairwise stuff will take care of itself.
. Talking about the Pairwise? He$&. Over on the bracketology thread, they already have us traveling to Grand Rapids to play Minnesota. What were we? Tied for last in the ECAC the second weekend in January?

What is huge is that St. Lawrence's last 3 games are against TUC.

And the next 3 are as well.

While SLU has historically had several strong 2nd half turnarounds, this one has been incredible.

I think that with a win against Dartmouth, we would clinch home ice for the 1st round. The good news is we control our own destiny, and we don't need help if we keep winning.

Not to point fingers/mock anybody, and I'm sure they will gladly eat their words, but looking back at how negative the mood was on here back in Dec/Jan seems pretty funny now. Obviously we knew they were a better team than the performance was showing, which caused the negative mood, but this has been a very fun 6-7 week stretch, let's keep it going for another few weeks and let things happen as they will!

We would clinch home ice and a first round bye with a win against Dartmouth, a Princeton win against Yale and a Harvard win against Clarkson. But, as you point out, just win and we control our own destiny.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Pairwise has us at #15 this morning. An incredible jump. Nice balanced scoring last night, and a strong 3rd period unlike so many games earlier in the year when we were outplayed in the last 20 minutes. Again, I credit the coaches and captains. They have this team prepared to close. Bring it home tonight boys!

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Congrats on the win last night. This team continues to improve. Another big game tonight. Dartmouth will be real hungry after we surprised them at Thompson a month ago and they were beaten down last night at Cheel.

The Saints will need to keep bringing their A game. Keep it up guys!

Hey, in late-September I picked us 9th in the ECAC Pick the Standings Contest and, as of late and today - am eating that pick. This "meal" tastes better than Prime Rib or Lobster.

I had them picked to finish 4th if I do recall so my pick is looking promising or at least close to it. I thought I was in trouble by about mid December

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

I didn't pick, but probably would have put them lower middle (7-8). Despite losing many statistical battles, we've been winning the one that counts-final score. We've played with intensity, hustle, and desire---and if we keep it up, we win. Tonight's a biggie with lots to lose, but more to gain, and as others have said, our fate is in our hands. Keep proving how wrong all us skeptics were. I love being wrong! Go Saints!

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Well we battled hard.........but you can't give up that many chances and that many shots on goal without paying a price. The Dartmouth team I saw with speed and skill in Hanover showed up in Canton tonight.
The standings will shift around again as Dartmouth moves up right behind us with 21 points while RPI leapfrogs us and moves into second. Ylae has 21 as well so it will be another typical end to the ECAC season with the last weekend deciding everything except first place.
Our trip to the Capitol District will certainly be an interesting one.

Enough about the Pairwise conversation please. Let's focus on what's immediately in front of us.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Just didn't have it tonight. Once again, SOG (40, including 18 in the 2nd) hurt. Wenny can do a lot (and he did,) but he needs help. Something was screwy because Flanagan, Austin, Dewey, and McGovern (with Thompson or Wick as 5th men) were on the ice for 2 D'mouth goals.

Regroup, rest up, and get back on track next weekend. Our fate is completely in our own hands, and I know we can (will ) rise to the occasion.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Completely agree critsports. We have got to look at one game and only one game-Union. Then, when we're done with them, look at RPI. We can't play for end of season position or think of what other teams may or may not do. Focus on Union.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

It just sounded in the audio broadcast like Dartmouth had more jump than us tonight. Despite the loss, though, and if math's correct - we are guaranteed home ice should we play in the first round of the playoffs.

On to the Capital District. FWIW, I plan to be at the RPI game but will not be at Union.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Dartmouth came out flying to start the game and I thought only because of Winny between the pipes was it 0-0 after the first period. Overall Dartmouth played the better game and had the extra jump. They wanted it more.

SLU did turn it on in the last 10 minutes, but it was to little to late.

The Saints are a good team, but when playing other good teams they do need to play 60 minutes of hard hockey to win.

At this point, they just need to keep their chin's up and play hard for 120 minutes next weekend. If they do that, good things well happen.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

While the main focal point is just win and get in to the bye, this last weekend is probably the most exciting in many years for league standing. Yael gets to host Cornell and Colgate, where Cornell appeared to play very spirited hockey this past weekend and Colgate has been pretty strong all year. Dartmouth gets Princeton and Qpac, so they will have their hands full as well. Then of course all 4 teams playing in the CD this weekend can make runs at the bye.

Those westerners who belittle the ECAC don't know what they're missing for excitement year in and year out.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

In advance of Friday's game against Union, I chatted with Saints assistant coach Kris Mayotte, a goaltender at Union from 2002-2006.

Mayotte discusses his budding coaching career, his time at Union, Greg Carey, Friday's tilt, and more.

You can listen to it on my blog or via this hotlink.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Well, Flanagan went under the knife Tuesday to have his appendix removed. Looks like he will be out 7 to 10 days. Hope he feels better soon!

Oh my! First and most importantly-take care of yourself and get well Kyle! We will miss you, but I know the rest of the team will pick up the slack. Won't be easy (nigh on to impossible,) but they will-for you. So you can leave the Saints by playing in and winning a league championship game.
