Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Fwiw. I have no insight and I'm not really sure who votes. I think it's still a toss up. I think Gaudrau will *not* win because he is a sophomore. That said, I think that interview with Greg Carvel lays out the problem for SLU's candidates pretty clearly. At the risk of p&$@ing somebody off, when Carvey says "I think Kyle Flanagan is the best player in college hockey" that tells you where his head and heart lies. Meanwhile Carey has a good shot at winning the nation's total points race and he might run away with the most goals.

The SLU chances may suffer from our own ambivalence. In Flanagan, we have a great all around player, by all accounts a great character player and an on and off ice leader and let's not forget this: a Canton boy and a Senior. This is his last best chance. The SLU coaching staff doesn't just live in Canton, they mostly grew up Canton and the North Country and the history of the Flanagan's in hockey and at SLU and in Canton is pretty rich. As a Canton native myself who went to CHS and SLU with PJ Flanagan, I'd be pretty pumped if an SLU player from Canton won the Hobey. So, I think the coaches are likely going to put their thumb on the scales for Flanagan for plenty of justifiable reasons.

But, Carey if he keeps the scoring up, would debatably make for a much stronger Hobey candidate to sell to the Western voters who have 15 year old biases against the ECAC.. It's much easier to explain lots of goals and total points and he has a great academic record, which Hobey cares about.
So my perhaps unfair and uneducated opinion is that we could end up diminishing Carey's chances by more strongly supporting Flanagan. And given the lack of media coverage of our games, the argument for Flanagan outside the ECAC is not as strong or as easy as it is for Carey, whose stats tell a very simple story, fair or unfair though that may be.

My prediction worth the pixels it's printed on, If Carey wins the overall points title and if he ends up with 30 goals through the ECACs, he gets it. After that, I have no idea.

This mostly is what I was thinking as well. Clearly the coaches and the fans will be pushing for Flanagan to win it and I can't blame them, but it ultimately will hurt Carey's chances. Another thing is that Carey is a junior and this is Flanagan's last chance. Carey still has a senior year left to give it another go.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Harvard is 2-0-2 in their last 4, so we hadn't better take them too lightly. Especially since we just eked out a 4-3 OT road victory in January. And if D'mouth figures out how to control Kyle, Greg, Jeremey, and George (combined for all 9 points against them in January), we could see a scary big challenge from a team that's only 1 point behind us. We have to be focused, intense, and willing to continue to play good fundamental but in your face hockey, and I still maintain the sophs have to step up. PP and PK were legendary over the weekend, but that can't last. We need to get control of SOG and FO's. That said, the league is so close that it will be real easy to fall real far, so I know the captains and coaches won't let these guys rest on their laurels, they've worked too hard to get where they are, and they want to stay there. Go Saints!

I hate to say this, but for the first time in weeks I actually have a bad feeling about this weekends games. I keep trying to shake it, but it just seems like a typical script for a let down. Let's hope the coaches and players don't let this happen. We can ill afford a let down and a big weekend this weekend will go along ways towards a first round bye and home ice in the second round. That would be huge!!!

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Kudos to Carvel and the coaching staff! Excellent job holding leads last weekend and not coming-out flat against Princeton after the big win! Nice turn around! I thought adding Thompson to the PK was an excellent move. His speed and grit made a difference especially drawing a penalty in the O zone to end Princeton's PP.

And I hate to say this too, but I agree. And let's not forget, many people picked Harvard at the top of the league this year, so their record probably doesn't show what their potential is.
And I also love Thompson's speed, but he needs to be more willing to mix it up (I've watched him skate off pucks several times,) and it sounds like he has been.

I have seen vast improvements in Thompson, but still room for improvement there for sure.

The thing is ... If we just continue to play the way we have been there is no reason for us not to win these games. Stay tight defensively, STAY OUT OF THE BOX and hope Wenny is strong and we will be fine. Let's Go Saints!!!

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Good article in the WDT today about Flanny coming up on Senior Night and also discussion with Flanny, Carey and Carvel about both their chances at Hobey.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

IMHO, the biggest thing we need to do is give Wenny a break. He can't be superman every game. SOG's are going to kill us, so the D has got to step up and start protecting him better. I've read they've made great strides, but things like the Q'pac 3rd period scares me. Bottom line--I know we can do it (despite my pesky old gut) so---GO SAINTS!

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Huge come from behind in the 3rd period win. And the stars aligned just right to give us 2nd place in the league. Speechless!

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Well throw the script out the door, they just proved me wrong. Great comeback and this team just does what it takes to win. Keep at it boys, another tough one tomorrow night. Way To Go Saints!!!!

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

6 points from the starters; 4 from the sophs-including Doherty's insurance goal in the 3rd. An assist for Thompson. Only 3 penalties. Wenny enjoys a relaxed 1st and 2nd period (6 SOG each), but gets shelled in the third (14). 1 for 4 on the PP; gave up 1 goal on 3 penalties. And the biggies? 2 goals in 12 seconds to take the lead in the 3rd and a 4-2 victory! Awesome!

And momentarily at least, we are tied for #16 in the Pairwise with Alaska and Merrimack. I don't know if that will last the evening but that is really amazing on a win against a non TUC.

Last I knew we were in 23rd in the pairwise ... That's one hell of a jump!!!

And I just checked the pairwise and it shows us tied for 15th I do believe.

That should improve if the Saints can win their final 3 over Dartmouth, Union and RPI. Win all 3 and you get to 19 wins. Even if they don't win ECAC but make it to Atlantic City that should be at least another 2 wins maybe 3 if they got to the finals and didn't win it. That would bring them to 21-22 wins win important wins over Quinnipiac in Hamden, Western Michigan at there place. There is a bad loss to RIT and Clarkson there but that was went SLU wasn't playing good hockey. They are hot right now and should be good enough to become at least the 2nd ECAC team especially with Yale and Dartmouth fading.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Glad to see all these posts and all this chatter!!! This team has got us all posting and talking which is great.

Another nice win and a come from behind at that. We win, RPI loses, the other stars align....Flanny gets a goal and an assist...Carey gets another goal, Hughes closing in on 100 points.....can it get any better than this???

Down here in Connecticut it was the big game between Q Pac and Ylae. It was on NBC Sports so got to watch it. Score was 4-1 Q Pac and they really pushed Ylae around (in my opinion.)

I'm guessing Dartmouth will be flying tomorrow night. They got whooped on tonight at Clarkson. They really are struggling to get their mojo back. Hope it doesn't happen tomorrow. :D ... I was at the Dartmouth game in Hanover with Tim U and after the first period we were thinking Dartmouth was bigger, stronger, faster.....so it is not going to be easy even if Dartmouth is struggling.

Let's go Saints....get another win tomorrow night. I'm guessing that game at RPI is going to be an interesting one next weekend.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Who'd of thought back in December that we'd be talking about the pairwise now? Nice game by the Saints tonight.................keep it up and the pairwise stuff will take care of itself.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Three goals on seven shots in third period, and Wenny handles thirteen of fourteen down the stretch!!!!!!Gotta love a strong horse with heart going strong down to the finish.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Great Win for the Saints! What a nice second half of the season so far. This is when winning really counts, gain momentum going into the playoffs and look to win the Championship. The only standings that matter are posted at the end of the year.

Go Saints Go!
