Springfield Regional: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

The Good: Springfield really made an effort: lots of welcoming community volunteers, entrance into the rink was easy if somewhat circuitous. Everyone was pleasant plus. The Concessions were varied and a cut above normal fare: everything from clam chowder to BBQ to varieties of sausages to tacos and taco salad.

The Bad: The parking facility next to the rink was closed: under reconstruction. Alternatives were offered on their website, but with no clue as to cost. Thursday, I paid $19.50 at a facility where payment upon exit was excrutiatingly slow. Saturday I paid nothing and got out reasonably quickly. Restrooms were inadequate: long lines all the time. At Saturday's game they couldn't get a functioning microphone for the child singing the National Anthem! (She sang at both Thursday games and was outstanding)

The Ugly: The facility had a hard time cap on selling alcohol: 7:30 P.M. Since the first game on Thursday went into two overtimes, alcohol was shut off before the end of the first period of the second game. The facility inexplicably prohibited the bands from playing at certain times, even if play had been stopped. Instead it inserted audio "charges" that no one paid any attention to since they weren't keyed to either team.

There was free parking at MGM Casino. I don’t see how your bad section can be bad given the free parking at MGM. It had free electric vehicle charging too. The Casino had restaurants and bathrooms for public use and they were very clean. To me, this was a major positive as compared to parking for TD Garden in Boston, for example.

I found very little to be negative about and enjoyed Springfield as a regional site. The only negatives for me is they didn’t appear to have coffee at concessions. And the lines for the men’s room were very long, so arena didn’t have enough bathrooms.

The other positives were many good eating/drinking options outside and nearby. The Casino if you felt like gambling. Short walk to basketball hall of fame.

This is something that drives me absolutely nuts. And I think (don't know for sure) that it might be an NCAA thing more than a facility issue. This is college hockey, not pro hockey, and bands are part and parcel of the college sports experience. So, just stop with the pumped-in audioporn and let the bands play.

And speaking of audioporn, the PA announcer in Providence really needs to switch to decaf.

This explains a lot (plus the EV lol). Just a friendly word of advice, mon ami ... NOTHING is free at the Casino ...

I’m glad that Springfield finally got a chance to hold a Regional and they did a good job overall. The arena was built in the early 1970s and has consistently served as a home for AHL hockey teams. In the “old days” the bathrooms were much smaller but yeah, lines still were long. My group ate at the brewery pre-game both days and they validated parking for the games, so free parking at Tower Square.
