Spengler Cup

Today, the first 5 players selected to the Spengler Cup team will be announced

Buccigross reports two:
Aiden Fink (Penn State)
Joey Muldowney (UConn)

I'm guessing the last skaters announced today will be an ECAC and AHA player based on the two player minimum from each conference
likely true the remaining player is from one of these, the only other news about that last player is that it’s another forward

Next 5 released:
F Charlie Cerrato, Penn State
F TJ Hughes, Michigan
F Danny Nelson, Notre Dame
F Cole Knuble, Notre Dame
D Eric Pohlkamp, Denver

Also the “2 per conference” has been lowered to 1

I’m guessing they’re mostly done with B1G players except maybe a goalie? maybe next 5 we get a few more NCHC to add on after PK and then the beginning of the next conference batch

The USCS Spengler Cup roster so far:

F Aiden Fink, PSU
F Joey Muldowney, UConn
F TJ Hughes, Michigan
F Danny Nelson, ND
F Cole Knuble, ND
F Charlie Cerrato, PSU

D Mac Gadowsky, Penn State
D Jake Livanavage, North Dakota
D Eric Pohlkamp, Denver

G Alex Tracy, Minnesota State

I hate that decision. If the AHA and CCHA have enough talent for the big schools to raid the cabinets every year, they have enough talent to showcase on this team.

Another set of names

worth noting that it sounds like Aiden Fink is injured and likely to be out longer term- doubt DiDi would make it otherwise

F Quinn Finley, Wisconsin
F JJ Wiebusch, Penn State
F Matt DiMarsico, Penn State
F Ryan Walsh, Cornell
D Vinny Borgesi, Northeastern
G Adam Gajan, UMD

Mike McMahon reports that WMU has barred their players from Spengler Cup. Michigan State is doing similar but they’re expecting to lose a significant amount of players for WJC.

Mini history of Spengler Cup:

dec 26-31 in Davos, Switzerland, 6 team invitational held since 1923. usually club teams but Canada usually sends a national team since 84, rarely NHLers and usually guys in Europe, minor leagues, or even college- most recently Massimo Rizzo from DU in 2023. HC Davos as host is a constant and they and Canada have the most titles at 16. the only other NA based orgs outside of Team Canada to play since the 90s is AHL Rochester Americans twice, but otherwise it has been mostly euro club teams. 2 college teams have gone (Minnesota 81 and NoDak 82) but this is the first time a collegiate selects team has been formed like this.

this year the participants are:
USCS, NCAA
IFK Helsinki, Liiga
HC Sparta Praha, Czech Extraliga
Team Canada
HC Fribourg-Gotteron, NL (2024 champ)

HC Davos, NL (host)

basically, its a trip to Switzerland to play in a century old tournament. interestingly, the very first tournament in 1923 was won by a bunch of Canadians who were studying at Oxford University
