I'll probably abstain from this thread, seeing how it has already been polluted by Wal-Mart Wolverines.
I will say this, though: It was a disappointing weekend. I wasn't expecting MSU to leave Minneapolis with victories of any sort, but I was expecting mildly competitive play. That Saturday game, in particular, was a disaster.
Niagara will pose an interesting challenge. The Purps have sketchy goaltending, but they also have some decent returning talent. I think it's really important, with Lake State coming up in a couple of weeks, to get a sweep and establish some momentum. I wouldn't be shocked if Niagara left East Lansing with a win, though.
I'll close by saying this: Paraphrasing what I said last year, we'll learn a lot about Anastos' coaching ability this year. Yes, a bunch of key players graduated, and yes, MSU will really feel Krug's departure this year. (And yeah, I'm beating a dead horse, but I'm still not too hot about the incoming class. Anastos and Comley did an admirable job rebuilding the 2011 class after a nightmarish list of decommitments, and I do think many of the incoming players have potential, but it's still a patchwork class and a middle-tier CCHA class. That'd probably translate to a bottom-tier B1G class, but we'll have that discussion next year.)
That said, MSU's not a bad hockey team. There's still some good talent on the roster, and I do think a middle-of-the-pack league finish is possible and a reasonable expectation. Really, it's all going to come down to how quickly the underclassmen mesh with the upperclassmen.

I couldn't agree more with this. I hope all the MSU fans out there have realistic expectations for this year. It's hard to play so many young d-men at the same time and expect great results immediately. I think teams with good speed will give MSU issues early on as the younger guys get used to the speed of the game at the D-1 level, especially getting the puck out of their own zone. Turnovers will happen and there will be some rough moments. Going on the road to play a very good Minnesota team for their first real games is asking a lot (Though I didn't think it would be as rough as it was).
They're still a year away, but I think that's good for the start of Big Ten hockey next year. I'd like to see the sophomores make a jump from last year to this year and all I ask from the freshman is to continue to grow and get better as the season goes on.

As much as I love getting up to Munn, the Friday games are really tough for those of us working in the Detroit area. If I drive up, I either have to leave work early (easier said than done some weeks) or I end up missing most of the first period. I'd love to see them switch to 7:35 start times on Fridays, but I know that'll never happen.

Also, anyone know if the new hockey jerseys are available to be purchased anywhere? All I can find online is the old jersey and I really like the new ones (Especially the throwback style they're going to wear later in the season). TIA

Whoa easy there streak. If I didn't know any better I'd guess you were taking that a bit personally. Every thread it seems has its 1 or 2 vagrant trolls and I'm sure the WalMart epithet was reserved for the little punk. Lets keep everything in context.
Also, it's not even November yet for krug's sake. That's way before Tim Staudt's college hockey season becomes a gleam in his sports column's eye!

Wasn't at the game, but based on the stats I saw it looks like we actually played hockey in the 3rd period. 20-4 shots? Wow. Where was that the first 40 minutes?

6 penalties on Niagara in the 3rd period. Lots of power-play time should mean lots of shots. Honestly, I thought they looked a little slow in the first period, but got much better as the game went on. Both Niagara goals were on kind of weird bounces and MSU was definitely the better team the last 40 minutes of the game. Hopefully that carries over to the game tonight

I agree with Spartanboy that the last 40 minutes were ours. I was surprised at the stats in the 2nd period that said we were outshot because it felt like we had the puck most of the time.
Niagara is definitely a decent club and we never stopped pushing. Finally we were awarded with some powerplays and goals, as our first PP didn't come until the 3rd period.

I think that's awesome. I would love to see them back at Munn in a couple years as well.
Anyways, good to battle back again and get the tie. I don't even remember the last time we pulled our goalie and got the tying goal. I do remember us losing leads several times over the last couple years due to an extra attacker, though.
I know Niagara is a tough team, but I thought we played much better overall friday night. We didn't seem to tilt the ice tonight until the 3rd period. This team needs to figure out how to play better in the first and actually score a goal in the 1st or 2nd period. That weird, fluke goal Niagara had did seem to really take the wind out of our sails for several minutes. Had that not happened, I really think we would have taken that game in regulation. Our guys were rolling and the crowd was rowdy.
Speaking of the crowd, the students were great tonight, especially in the third period. The A-team looks nearly twice the size the slapshots ever were and they made a lot of noise down the stretch, there. I really hope they keep it up.

Yes, just for the fans....the game was a tie.
I was at the Saturday game...first two periods MSU looked like a team that would be lucky tto stay out of last place...in the third period I leaned over and asked my wife where this team I was seeing had been hiding.
