Solar Eclipse

Total Solar Eclipse.

If you plan on driving anywhere, be safe. If anything like 2 previous solar eclipses I have seen it will be nuts.

A few activities to amuse yourself, the kids and grandkids.


Use a strainer colander with lots of holes as a pin hole projector. As light passes through the holes you can get a sun image to show up on concrete as the eclipse progress. You will have to raise or lower strainer colander to focus sun images on the concrete. If there are 100 holes you will get lots of sun images.


You could use an index card with pin holes in it. Use a second card to focus sun images on.


If your trees have leaves you get lots of sun images on the concrete as the sunlight passes through the leaves.


Hopefully the weather will cooperate wherever you are located.

I live in prime totality area. Over three minutes. Today is bright and sunny. I fear Monday is going to be cloudy. Very cloudy. I'm prepared to be disappointed. :-(

I’m west of Columbus Ohio right on edge of totality area. Very cloudy right now through Monday morning. Supposed to clear up some early Monday afternoon. I plan on going to a friend’s house 10 miles north and west to predicted clearer skies. We will see. Hope it clears some for you.
 
I have a hockey related eclipse story. When LaBahn first opened up we used to sit behind the opposing team goal. There was a game where the opposing goalie was always taking off her helmet to refresh herself. The students perched right above her net would always start singing "Total eclipse of the heart" to her. Course the song starts out by male person singing "turn around". One of the most fantastic cheers / taunts in history of sporting events.

A great show just west of Columbus Ohio. The weather cooperated. Birds were roosting. Some owls came out. Deer were going into the fields to eat. During totality we saw stars and planets. This is my 3 solar eclipse and I am still amazed. Spent the day with youngsters who witnessed their 1st solar eclipse. Great reactions.

Similar location for me. Within the Greater Columbus Area, I was "just Northwest enough" to be inside the totality area. My eclipse experience can be summarized this way:

- Cool Down? Yes.
- Darkness? Yes.
- Weather? Surprisingly Clear Skies.
- Corona Visibility During Totality? Astounding Site Lasting 30 Seconds.
- TV Viewing? 2 Hours, Surfing Back & Forth Between Local & National Channels.

When your family tells you that you have to chase the total eclipse of the sun since it falls on what happens to be the latest in a long line of your major birthdays, and you act your age and say “nah" and then your wife says “No, we’re going for it, like it or not,” and you go for it and end up on the Maine-New Hampshire border on an almost ice-out lake where nevertheless a foot of snow has gathered and where two kiteboarders are unbelievably carving crisp turns in the deep surface and, approaching totality, a bald eagle is unbelievably carving disoriented turns in what you thought before was the sky, you know you’ve experienced something approaching total awesomeness.
