Smaller Schools......

Re: Smaller Schools......

A Big 10 Conference in hockey means better visibility for college hockey nationally, so I'm all for it. The smaller schools will be fine, but I do think the liklihood of an RIT, Bemidji, or Brown's chances of ever winning a title will be pretty much ended.

The B10 schools, the power brokers in Hockey East (BC, BU), and the western teams (UND, DU) will be the only teams that probably will consistently win national titles going forward. It'll resemble NCAA basketball which may or may not be good depending on what school you root for.

You can't deny that it's good "overall" for the sport though

Define "overall"... isn't that what its all about? The big boys feel they need to be validated by the larger group?

Re: Smaller Schools......

Maybe the NCAA needs to act like a profesional sports organization and look after the health of their members like the NFL and MLB. They (NCAA) seem to do this for basketball and football but from what I've read here, not so much for hockey, leaving it up to the individual conferences to muddle through it.

The only way the NCAA cares about football is the3 boatloads of money that can be made. We nearly saw massive realignment and the end of the Big 12 conference because of it.

There is nothing good about a BTHC.

It destroys traditional rivalries in the WCHA.
It removes a lot of luster from the CCHA which leans on UM and MSU.

I don't think Red Berenson or Ron Mason would appreciate seeing the CCHA lose in the long run. I find it hard to believe they would be in favor of such a thing.

It will create a Tier1, Tier 2 beyond what it seen even today in college hockey.
All blue chip recruits will automatically go for the big time programs. The remaining schools will only get what is left.

Hockey at the smaller schools will only survive if the local communities that enjoy having the sport, step up their support with attendance and Blue Line Club support groups.

I hope Penn State just joins the CCHA and let college hockey remain dramatically unchanged.

Just like college football, basketball, and baseball. And, don't tell me we don't have a case of the contenders and the wannabes right now. I would venture that if we picked the 16 team field right now, most of us would get 10-12 right.

If the NCAA gets its wish of QF on campus sites, we're going to REALLY see a case of haves and have nots.

Isnt' that what this thread is really about. Making money for everybody so big and small can survive.

I can only think (avoiding assuming) that the reason these schools are folding their programs is budgetary and not for lack of players wanting to compete.

So, would a big ten conference provide the means for this? If not, then does anybody see any other need for this?

Phin's win!

Jets and Pats, eh, who cares.

Penn State vs. Boston College or Penn State vs. Michigan in the national final is much better for the sport of college hockey (TV, etc) than Mankato vs. Miami of Ohio.

Not really.

What part of hockey on TV does not get ratings don't you people understand? The evidence is clear. Hockey is NOT A WINNER on TV. Never has been, and never will be.

The NHL can't make TV work what makes you people and the Big 10 idiots think that college hockey can?

Yes, and we're in grave danger of a Mankato vs. Miami final, right?

Not true. In fact, I would submit that the "smaller" schools ability to still compete with "big" schools in this day and age is a strength of college hockey.

Why does this keep sounding like that we exist solely at the pleasure of the bigger schools?

I'll admit, if I weren't a hockey fan, I'd be more inclined to watch Michigan vs. Wisconsin or BC vs. Minnesota than two schools that few have heard of. I think it's important that "name" schools make the FF final as much as possible. Nothing against the small schools, but seeing name schools on national TV ads some legitmacy to the sport as far as Im concerned.

I can't stand lacrosse, but I''ll watch Duke vs. Syracuse more than I'd watch Johns Hopkins vs. some other small school. It's just perception I guess.
