She Who Must Be Obeyed

Re: She Who Must Be Obeyed

Us citizens (Mookie) pay us taxes when they live in another country!!!

One that has NO taxes to boot

Canadians don’t :(

Obviously every country is different, and also the country you work in might want to claim taxes. My brother-in-law worked in Japan for a total of 18 years. He worked for an American, but international, company. The American office paid him, so that part of his taxes was simple. I believe Japan wanted a piece of that though, and his company essentially paid that portion of the taxes.

States are like that too. Technically, even a business trip to New York State requires you to pay out of residence state income tax to NYS for that period of time you are "working" in NYS.

It's get really complicated for athletes who compete around the world, like golfers or tennis players, as each country sometimes wants to claim a portion of income taxes that you earned in prize money in that country.

I filed in 7 states last year. It sucked.

My record was 8 in one year. Hawaii and Virginia sent me refunds of less than 10 cents.
When I worked abroad I had to pay Brit and us taxes but my firm paid the Brit taxes. Since I was abroad no us federal withholding came out of my checks so my company held it for me. They held over 10k too much so that was a surprise check that year

Fortune 500

I'm lost, then. If you, say, work for Deloitte and Touche and you do gigs in different states, you're still earning money back at your home base, right? I've done TDYs for my F500 company but they still cut my checks from the same place back home.

I don't get it.

No, you have to file in the state of the physical location where you're working for that specific job/date. So if you're based in MI, like Fade, but you're working for a week in NC, then you have to file that week's wages with NC.

I never had to do that working for the Feds. I received one W2 with only Federal & Maryland taxes withheld.

Uh. Not me.

It's like paying state use taxes. Technically you're supposed to, very few people ever do. Most people would also be under the threshold to require filing in other states, anyway. A week's wages at even 75k/yr is roughly ~$1500, no state would come after you for $100.

Several cities have local taxes also. My son had to file during college while doing a "paid" internship. His refund was something like $2. I told him to not cash the check as a protest.

Never had to do that for work. Plus you probably didn't work there long enough to have to file. Most states have a minimum.

ETA: Huh... Oops. *shrug*

If I want to claim any local per-diem, hotel, or other client site expenses for a project, I have to set the location where I worked down to at least the state and county level. That is forced within our timekeeping system, so I can't lie about it even if I wanted to try.

I do the same thing. Never filed in other states. Then again, I would never claim business expenses on my own taxes. I would just take the reimbursement from my company. We also can't charge travel to a project. That all gets expensed to our department.

Re: She Who Must Be Obeyed

So I was recommended by one of my coworkers to join the women's group for my organization. Today was the first meeting I attended and part of it was to plan a seminar on men being advocates for women in our organization. I couldn't believe some of the horror stories from the younger women who shared their stories, even recently.

It's shocking how bad it still is, even in a fairly progressive and inclusive environment. Or what I thought was one.

Business is always going to be bad because business, like politics, is a place where by definition predators thrive. Other bad spots: law enforcement, the military, entertainment, athletics, and other arenas where attributes other than intelligence get you ahead.

My co-workers still say awful things when women are not around. I don't hear them much anymore because I try (not always successfully) to call BS on it when it happens, so now they essentially think of me as an Honorary Woman when it comes to bad jokes. And of course I have a few righty friends who go out of their way to come up with the worst possible thing to say to me to see if they can get a rise out of me, because that's what people do. I opine about the relative merits of their sh-thole southern roots in kind, for the same reason that I wore my bright orange Forever Shea t-shirt to work yesterday.
