Re: Severe Ronaldstorm Warning: the Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread, Part the Sec
I think it is telling that the attendance was awful both nights this weekend, and the place was a tomb on Saturday. Like I said in the series thread, they were checking people's pulses to make sure there were living bodies in the arena and waking people up at the end of the game and telling them that it was time to go home. Saying that attendance broke 2,000 for either of those games is a joke. But then again, there are a lot of things that are jokes up the hill.
I also think it is telling that, a few posts ago, manuerspreader made the point that the team has had no jump for the second game of the weekend for three series in a row. Interesting coincidence. That sounds like a strength and conditioning problem to me, that the team just does not have the endurance to make it through a weekend of hockey. Other teams are able to come out on the back end and just take it to us. I thought a change in the strength and conditioning department a couple of years ago and the investment in the skating treadmill were supposed to make Tech a team with superior conditioning and a team that would get stronger as the game wore on. That is obviously not the case. Combine that with the common occurrence of injuries, and I think you have a good idea where one of the problems is.
Breakdowns on defense and not being able to clear the zone. We have been talking about that for years, despite it being a 'fixable' problem. I think that falls under the category of being ready to play, which falls mainly in the realm of practice time/repetition during the week/coaching. The systems are not working, and that falls on the shoulder of the players (who fail to execute it) and the coaches (who fail to make the right adjustments based on personnel).
Friday was smoke and mirrors and a very lucky tying goal. But the team played hard, and there was fight in them. Saturday was absolutely pathetic. There was not a single thing the team did right. They were not in sync with each other, they were not physical with the other team. It took until well into the second period for them to even get to double digits in the shot column. 11 shots in two periods? Does not sound like a winning recipe to me. Somebody should have reminded them that the game started two hours earlier than normal?
It is clear that this is not all Jamie Russell. It is clear that this is not entirely strength and conditioning. It is clear that this is not all on the players. It is clear that this is not all on the athletic department. However, the cumulative effect of the failures in all of these facets has resulted in an 18 game winless streak (0-16-2) and some of the darkest days this program has seen. With Duluth coming to town next weekend, it is likely that we will reach the 20 game winless plateau, which has not been seen at this University. The cumulative addition of these failures is the definition of what I call the culture of hockey at Michigan Tech.
They can't even give away the entire student allotment of tickets. The community has lost interest. There is a great disconnect between the main campus and what is going on up the hill (in all sports, even the ones that are successful). There is no return on investment, both from a financial and emotional standpoint. Things are bleak, and something must be done to change the momentum. Obviously, the AD is doing something right on the D2 side of the building, so that department deserves to stay. It really isn't feasible to just not renew the scholarships of a great number of players, so that isn't a logical option. So you look at the coaching staff, and the strength and conditioning staff. And there, you have to make the change.
