Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

Idk, I think not enough credit is being given to Cortland, this is a team that shut out plattsburgh last week, once I can call a fluke, but going to OT it with oz and shutting out platty a week apart, I gotta give props to Cortland, they seem to be on the ball late in the season. Plattsburgh is a tough team, About as tough as they come, to shut them out and go to OT with oz, they might surprise people. I didn't listen to the game but I'm definitely surprised looking at the score, I thought it would be a cake walk for oz.

they also beat potsdam the next night after beating platts NOT a ez thing to do, Northcountry sweep

Question???? What is it going to take for Bremner to stop taking penalties??? He is a senior who has played a lot and should know better.......:D with that said I do like his style of play but it CAN be done without taking a duece

Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

In Bremners defense on the goalie interference, the goalie moved out into him while he was jostling with a Cortland player to get to the lose puck. It seems like as soon as a goalie is touched anymore it is a penalty. I have seen Beckwith and Jones get flattened into the net and no call was made but then I have seen guys bump the goalie when he is three feet out of the paint and get called.

As usual the officiating was down right awful all night long with so many obvious penalties missed and some of what they did call on both teams was garbage.

Sounds like officiating is a problem in both the East & West hockey regions this season.
The crew, we had last nite, (esp. the big, round ref) was terrible.
He must be related to Stauber with all the time he spent talking to him during and after the game:confused:

I know the refs are not the greatest, but he does lead the team in pens, and 2 goalie related/offensive zones penalties in-a-row.....I am sure that coach G has told him that he has a BULLSEYE on his back as far as the refs are concerned, they DO talk to each other about this.....he has to chill, or it may cost bigtime when it really counts.......also he is a GREAT penalty killer as well, cant kill'em when he in the sin bin........otherwise as stated love his grit hustle......as for lastnights game, top teams find away to win most of these types of games..nice job, but my fingernails cant take it........

Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

Cortland, while certainly not as talented as teams like the Lakers and Cardinals has found a formula as of late to compete. The game plan of collapsing in front of their own net and sacrificing their bodies is just about the only way for them to beat a team like Lakers.

I've coached against teams that use this strategy and I can tell you first hand that it is extremely frustrating for the players. When we were in the offensive zone it was tough to generate any real chances, it was just too bottled up. We were forced to rethink our game plan and looked for our opportunities in the transition game. We even went as far as to let the other team clear their own zone at times so we could attack with speed. Late in the game Oswego was able to generate chances through their transition game and the end result was the floodgates were open.

Another item, it has been mentioned several times that the Lakers were looking to be perfect last night, making the extra pass and not shooting. Having played against hot goaltenders, and teams that lay down to block shots, it's easy to lose confidence. I don't fault the boys for looking for the back door passes (though when a team is collapsing like Cortland it's tough to get a clean pass through). I'd much rather my players try the back door than shoot the puck up into the goalie's chest.

Overall it was a good road win. Hopefully the boys and coaches learned from the experience.

I wouldnt even had noticed it had madison not perpetuated the myth the Lakers dont bring their "A" game against so-called pushovers.

No myth about it GreatLaker, they struggle against teams they should runover for the simple reason they do not take those opponents seriously. Yes, they battle back and win those games (Morrisville last year and Cortland so far) but they need to come out and try to bury those teams much as they did to Pottsdam. It always appears to be defensive breakdowns that hurt the Lakers and not a potent offense. I believe this years Lakers will go far because of the close games (this discussion should be in the Lake thread not the Cortland thread).

They had 21 shots in the 1st period, they most certainly came out ready to play. When did we reach the point where the perception is this team is so good that if they do not have every game wrapped up by the end of the 1st it's because they took their foe lightly? The problem is that the last couple of years the Lakers have done such a good job of bringing their A game every night that when there is a close game people such as yourself act like the sky is falling.

Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

The had 21 shots in the first, at least six or seven blocked, hit the post once and were robbed on a couple of close chances; they came to play. They knew it was going to be a battle and they certainly did not expect to waltz right through Cortland. They got frustrated with not being able to score and Beckwith didn't do anything to help their confidence. They had trouble connecting on passes on the break out for a while but once they started connecting in the third they started skating right by the Cortland D men and neutralized the pile of players in front of the net. Things were snowballing for a while but they found another gear and were able to grind out a win against a very determined opponent on their own rink, I don't see how you can find any major faults with that.

Hey, it was a win!!!! Look at Cortland's last few games, went up north and swept the weekend, gave Oswego all it could handle last night before falling in ot. Then tonight they are giving Elmira a very hard time. Time to move on and start looking at Morrisville next weekend. Finally a HOME game!!! Seems like forever since they have played at the CC. Go Lakers!!!!!

Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

A final thought on last nights game, as a hockey fan it was nice to see a game with some drama to it involving Cortland. I haven't personally witnessed a good Cortland game since the first game of the 2004 SUNYAC Quarter Finals. They have so many trophies in those cases outside the rink, I wish they would embrace the hockey team a little more so we could see a few more tight games with them.

It comes with the tide of the game - what do you otherwise expect in reaction from Laker fans; being like the Cortland fanfare at the game?:D Count me in the "sky is falling" bunch. I know you're not serious about that worry with the 1st either, but going down 3-1 with 4 minutes to play is a dubious situation no matter what the team. It goes down to the wire, and I for one, don't want to see the magic end.

And the best part is, it didn't. The Lakers have blown out and ground out fantastic wins, and the simple fact is that those grinders take a wild toll on the crowd - hence the lack of fingernails, and the thrill of victory being extremely sweet. This is only on the worry that the Lakers may falter like this again versus the likes of SNC, PSU, CSC, etc., and the hole may be too big to crawl out of.

Eh, heck lakerfan, you're right. Homeward they go, and savor the victory! Bring on Morrisville.

The defensive pair of Carr and Huinink is just plain bad, they are very lazy at times and they don't communicate well at all. VanBoxmeer is head and shoulders the best defenseman on the team and he and Anderson feed off of one another very well.

The last game that I saw was against Curry, and Hank and Anderson were teamed up on D for that game. Has Coach G been teaming this pair up regularly now? They played good in the Curry game and it sounds like they are working well together. Hopefully they will develop into the top defenseman that the Lakers need.

HVB and Anderson were paired together their freshmen year and I'd argue they were probably the best pairing that year. Anderson's injury last year kind of exposed HVB's lack of lateral speed, but also let HVB show a little more offense. The times I've seen the two play this year, they feed very well off of each other, with HVB becoming a bit more physical because he has Anderson to cover up for him.

Thanks for the quick eval of the two.

So now that the Lakers have wrapped up 1st place in the SUNYAC, any buzz about if we'll see anyone in net other than Beckwith for the final 3 regular season tilts?

my guess is we'll still see beckwith in, we don't want him getting rusty on us now

Fine tuning your lines is one thing...I agree with '10 that Paul needs to stay sharp especially when you consider his recent injury layoff.... Build up a big lead and want to give someone else third period minutes? I will take that high class problem all day, every day.

Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

I would think Beckwith will be in for all three games. He was way off against Cortland so he needs to get right back in to see how well he bounces back. With the playoffs on the way you need to know if your top guy is going to be ready and it looks like spending six weeks on the sidelines has led to some inconsistency. Three more games to work through it certainly would not hurt.

We may see Hare or Jones against Brockport if Beckwith looks like his usual self against Morrisville.
