That sucks. I've always enjoyed listening to Lyons call games. I see in the Times story that Leighton won't discuss it and Lyons couldn't be reached for comment. Paging LyonsDen: what's the story?

Its bad enough for the guy that he no longer has the job, I'm sure the last thing he wants is for the details to make it onto these pages.

I liked Don as an announcer, but I certainly wouldn't say he will be impossible to replace. I can only hope that Reichel goes with Dandy Donny.

Maybe just budget cuts. Hope Zack Fisch gets a shot at the gig. I always preferred his call to Lyons.

Maybe. If Leighton won't say anything it's possible Don would want to share the story from his perspective. And yes, I wouldn't miss Reichel.

I didn't think Don was the greatest play by play guy, but I would never wish a guy to lose his job especially since he has a family. I wonder if it was a contract dispute? The "HR" issue that was quoted by the company spoke person in the paper could mean anything.

As for Reichel, I know he is goofy, but I actually don't mind him. His interviews after the game make me laugh with his stupid questions he ask the players and his goal call has become a Husky tradition. Zack Fisch and Reichel sound like a good pair to me.

I wouldn't mind if Bremer called the Husky games for a season or two, though he's probably settled into a off season routine and he certainly has no need for the money. Also, the last part of the season might run into scheduling conflicts with spring training, but I think a lot of that could be worked out if Dick wanted to do so.

Obviously, I'd be just fine with Zack Fisch as well, but I just wanted to point out that there are other high profile alumni alternatives. Other than those two guys, I think that the school would prefer a local tv broadcaster with a little name recognition. Kind of like Jim Rich for TV, but more likely a younger sports journalist with a bit quicker play by play chops. For straight up talent, they're better off sifting through sample tapes of broadcasters from minor market hockey and baseball teams, but I don't think they'll end up going this route.

It is a low paying job, so it most likely has to be a young person like Zach or somebody just looking for a second gig like Jim Rich does on the TV side. Other more high profile grads in other markets or on ESPN(Clay) don't want to come back to make peanuts.

IMHO, you guys have the best hockey announcer I have ever heard living right in the area, and, he's unemployed. None other than former SCSU and UNO play-by-play-man, Greg Harrington.

Harrington got jerked around by UNO because the team didn't want to underwrite his travel expenses any longer from the Twin Cities to Omaha and to road game sites since he wouldn't be/wasn't traveling with the team. This was supposedly costing the university an extra 40 grand per year and that's why they axed him after 12 seasons. This outraged a lot of UNO fans, me among them.

I believe that Greg told me once that he called SCSU games in the '80's. Am I correct? The guy is a Mike Emrick quality hockey play-by-play man. He was one of the best things about UNO hockey the whole time he was here. Our program lost something with his departure.

Footnote: UNO had Greg do our series at Bemidji State last season, filling in for his replacement, Dave Ahlers, who is UNO's Director of Media Relations. Can't remember why Dave could not be there at the moment. I like Dave, but he is a POOR substitute for Greg Harrington as a play-by-play man.

Any of you old enough to remember him?

Yes, I certainly remember Greg Harrington from the 80's--and agree with you that he is a top-notch play by play guy. In fact, I asked a friend of mine last weekend if Harrington was: a) still in the area; b) still alive. Zach Fisch is an excellent pbp guy, and a recent grad of SCSU. But Harrington would be a great addition as well. Thanks for the info!

I think they need to go young and see if they can get a guy like Zack to stick around for 20+ years and build a tradition on the radio side. Let's face it Leighton broadcasting is cheap and so is SCSU so Zach's odds are probaly pretty good......:D

Dont think Zack would leave Dubuque just yet. He recently got engaged to a local girl and is always raving about the Saints organization.

We know that Zack put in for the job, but that doesn't mean he'd take the job regardless of the offer. His responsibilities are Dubuque are more extensive than just play-by-play. He'd need similar responsibilities/compensation at KNSI, plus apparently, a very understanding fiance.

I'm not sure if there are words to describe just how annoying and terrible Dave Reichel really is. Holy crap.

I don't know why they even bother paying him. Just record him doing six different moan/groan sounds and then have them as hot buttons, then hit them right in the middle of the pxp guy's call of the action, and you've got Reichel.

I agree. He adds NOTHING to the broadcast other than orgasm sounds.

Dan Terhaar as the new voice of Husky hockey. Interesting Hire. I wonder of this is a guy who would stick around? The pay has to be 1/10 of what he for paid when he did wild games.

He'll only be in for 2-3 years at most.
