SCSU National Hockey Center Expansion to Break Ground. FINALLY!

Re: SCSU National Hockey Center Expansion to Break Ground. FINALLY!

Right from the article that is linked at the beginning of the thread on this topic:

"The hockey center holds about 8,000 spectators for concerts and 6,000 for hockey. Designed by Grand Forks, N.D.-based JLG Architects, the expansion won’t add any significant new seating capacity, although it does call for about a dozen luxury suites."

My guess is that it ups capacity at the NHC by whatever number of "seats" are in each luxury box. That number is 20 per box here in Omaha at the Centurylink Center (times 32 suites).

The reason it doesn't add many seats is because our current lower level seats suck and are being replaces with nicer bigger seats. So even though they are adding seats on the ends and luxary seats, the total seats are not going up much.

The last couple of years, attendance has been soft and we are having a hard time filling the seats we have. I am fine with not adding any more.

The original seating capacity was 6000. Two subsequent minor renovations that added chairback seats to each of the upper levels lowered capacity to the current seating capacity of about 5300. I think total capacity is something like 6149 right now, which I find interesting, because when there were 6000 seats the total capacity was 7051.

By looking at the floor plans, it looks like there will be almost 30 suites.

Re: SCSU National Hockey Center Expansion to Break Ground. FINALLY!

Spending $30MM just for renovations and still be in the same building in the end seems excessive to me. I can't imagine they will mess with the concrete work for the main seating area so you're going to end up with the same seating area and same rink with new chairs and some suites. So where is the other $28MM going? Tech just put in new suites and replaced all the seats and the bill wasn't anywhere near that amount.

The plans are available for review and are quite impressive.

30 suites flies in the face of the newspaper article I quoted above. It says "about a dozen".

This very web site lists the current capacity of the NHC as 5,763:

Maybe you guys have as much trouble as we do with various sources inaccurately listing the size of your building, like us?

I have noticed that a lot of places use the 5763 figure, which was correct from 2000-2006. Then they added the second set of upper level chairback seats and lowered seating to 5371 as per the SCSU website: http://www.stcloudstate.edu/athletics/facilities/nhc.asp

This article from the St. Cloud Times says 20-30 suites. I think some won't be added until the second phase. http://www.sctimes.com/article/2012...renovation-ceremony-set-Friday?nclick_check=1

Looking at the plans on that site, it looked like about a dozen in Phase 1 and a total of 29 from my quick count when Phase 2 takes place.

Look at the plans it is going to be a lot different. The section I sit in had concrete work done when they put in the seat back chairs and I assume the rest of the upper dick that currently has benches will be done the same way. All the lower level seats will be new lager seats so I assume some concrete work will need to be done there. Then they are putting seats on the ends which will require more concrete work being done not to mention a whole new concourse in the second level. It is also going to have a 3rd and 4th level as well. The changes are going to be huge.

Thanks for the info all. The capacity at 6000 is about right for St Cloud. Much of the building will be new. Mostly I am happy with all the new fan amenities. The building needed a lift. It will be one of the nicer arenas.
