Scotus 11: Will Thomas Ever Speak Again?

Re: Scotus 11: Will Thomas Ever Speak Again?

If one of these women are believable, beyond their rep as just being credible in other areas of their careers, if their STORY is credible, I am with you. Just going by other outside factors, that's not enough for me.

If they can have us believe that he assaulted one of these women, and not just ride on their reputation (and his questionable one), using info, facts, events, etc....ok, then we move on from there.
IIt isn't whether they are credible it is that the GOP is choosing to not look to see if they are

And again, people wonder why women hesitate to share.
This.

That is really the sad part, for real. Sickening when that happens. Yes, I'm being serious. I can't even imagine THINKING of doing that to a woman. It's f*ing sick.
Having to deal with someone who has had this happen is awful. They wake up having no recollection and scared. If they aren't that experienced you need to tell them what evidence might be that there has been 'activity'. Devastating.

It's 100% irrelevant whether the charges are true or not. The Republicans are choosing not to investigate, so the message to *actual* perps has been sent: there's a pretty good chance you'll skate, because men in power don't believe accusers.
Much more articulate that me. This is it. If they listened, really listened not dismissed the person and then mouthed platitudes of listening, then didn't believe that might be different. This is like Anita Hill all over. We knew it was credible and no one cared.

Re: Scotus 11: Will Thomas Ever Speak Again?

So high school age girls only drink when forced to? You must have gone to some different parties then I went to.
It's funny how when you get girls drunk and drug them their memory isn't the best...

What the hell? A girl drinking isn’t consenting to being drugged, or being assaulted.

Re: Scotus 11: Will Thomas Ever Speak Again?

Two men have apprently spoken to judiciary committee to say they may have been the guys who assaulted Ford.

Re: Scotus 11: Will Thomas Ever Speak Again?

Many people here and in the news have pointed out how traumatized people not only bury memories where they are difficult to retrieve but also construct inaccurate memories in order to shield themselves from harm. It often takes years and years of therapy to sort those things out. That can make testifying about it years later a scary and unpredictable experience, and it can also make the search for truth more complicated for both sides. It also makes corroborating evidence more meaningful, even if it is not eye witness testimony.

It's just unfortunate that what will happen today and tomorrow is a political tennis match and not a search for the truth. It takes real stones for anyone in Ford's position to put themselves in this position. Kavanaugh has a lot to lose here but also a huge amount to gain. For Ford, it's mostly a matter of avoiding or dealing with harm.

SOL has probably run on those offenses, so they could come forward now without fear of prosecution. uno would likely know.

Re: Scotus 11: Will Thomas Ever Speak Again?

I question two things.

1. Why would these women come forward and destroy their own lives just to get Kavanaugh?
2. Why doesn't the accused want the FBI to investigate?

For #1 I have no good answer.
For #2 I am guessing that Turtle Boy finally overplayed his hand. This nomination and vote is not so late that they likely will not get anyone else through and if he happens to lose the Senate he will have blown something no one in their right mind could have blown. It would be the equivalent of running 20 yards free toward the end zone and celebrating before you got there only to fumble before crossing.

Also, I think this case and it's discussion highlights one important fact. Us humans are mostly defined by our childhood. Our first 18 years. Some of us break free of that because we use it as leverage but for the most part you are a complete molded human being psychologically by 18. And if you were involved in parties like this guy was during High School and College you probably should be haunted by them later in life. It certainly affected the girls involved.

Neurologists say the male brain is not fully molded and developed until the age of 25 (it's younger for females). So, your theory would have to be amended to the first 25 years of your life.

I'm willing to amend to 25. That makes sense actually in a lot of ways now that you say it. I'm always open to science. I think my point still holds. The 18 age was arbitrary for sure.

No SoL in Maryland. I'm sure these two men are off to turn themselves in.

Re: Scotus 11: Will Thomas Ever Speak Again?

thx. I suppose there is a question whether some of these crimes would be prosecuted as sexual abuse or as another crime, depending on the statutory definitions. But it looks like they would likely still be on the hook. Still might be difficult to prosecute, strange as that sounds, given that there are admissions, since the victim will have stated under oath that it was someone else. What a mess.

I know. I was just being anal. :-) And educational.

On a more serious point, this is why psychologists say that young males, early 20s, are still prone to rash decisions and violent outbursts, more so than after 25.

It is a political event. That's why I personally don't feel sorry for any of the parties involved, or worry particularly about any harm to them or their reputation.

The simple truth is this. The Senate, this Senate, any Senate can install a serial killer on the Supreme Court if they choose. Those are our rules. We made those rules and agree to play by them. Our only remedy, if we're unhappy with their choice, is vote the Senators out of office. It's a political game. The Senators weigh the political impact of their choice.

Handy complains about the Senate rushing the nomination through. Of course they are rushing the nomination through. It is politically expedient for them to do so. They would be idiots to not rush the nominee through. They could lose the majority and not control who gets installed. Again, that is politics. It is played that way, by all politicians, since politics was invented.

I don't feel sorry for people who inject themselves into political feuds, then get splashed with mud. If Kavanaugh is 100% innocent of all of the scandalous claims that have been made against him, I don't feel one bit sorry for him. He chose to let himself be nominated for this position and be injected into a political feud. The same with the accusers.

I may respect or admire people who are willing to so inject themselves. I probably wouldn't do it. But I don't feel sorry for anyone who takes that step.

Correct. And this is why I find Bren't musings about the word "Fair" and destroying a persons life hilarious.

1. There is nothing "fair" about this life. Never has been, never will be.
2. You have things like this in your past, you know it, you don't put yourself in the public eye. It's pretty simple calculation to make. And if you don't and you're being railroaded, truly railroaded you beg, scream, holler for an FBI investigation. Which is not happening here.

How do you determine what constitutes credible, and what's just a woman making up stories?

I mean, for me, just reading his yearbook page tells me everything I need to know how what sort of person he was in high school, and whether he was capable of doing something like this.

A lot of truth to all that.

But don't you feel sorry for Mr. Avenatti? The guy just wants justice.
