I'm hung up on the part where, apparently, it's embarrassing for young men to purchase plain old wet wipes, but somehow not embarrassing when said wipes are branded as "dude wipes".

Yeah, I cringed hard when I read that part.

A young-Earth Creationist is suing the Grand Canyon for religious discrimination. Basically, he wants to collect rocks for "research" and park administrators told him no.

This smells like they deliberately submitted a proposal they knew would probably be rejected, as a setup for the attention-whoring lawsuit.

If you work in the Energy Sector right now and your focus in on the future you should move out of the country.

WASHINGTON — President Trump’s budget proposal for 2018 envisions a flurry of changes to domestic energy policy, reaping billions of dollars in one-time revenue from oil and gas resources while cutting research into future energy technologies that could pay long-term dividends.

Mr. Trump’s budget, released Tuesday, says it will raise about $36 billion over the next 10 years by selling off major American energy resources and infrastructure, opening up vast new areas of public land for oil and gas drilling, and redirecting state revenues from oil and gas royalties back to Washington.

At the same time, the budget would cut $3.1 billion from energy research programs at the Energy Department, an 18 percent reduction from last year’s spending. These programs are aimed at developing innovative technologies like better batteries for electric vehicles or carbon capture for coal and gas plants — all of which could one day help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat global warming.

Critics say these cuts could imperil American leadership in cutting-edge clean energy industries.

America is no longer interested in you.

We're just funnier. Conservatives want to make observation, result: dumb, vaguely threatening "snowflake" memes. Liberals want to make related observation, result: wonderful.

LOL. Yes, it is almost always wealthy, "clean eating" types who are anti-vaxxers. Funny how that works.

This doesn't sound good:
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news...died-last-year-why-you-should-care/348418001/

1/3 of honeybee colonies died last year. Is that a lot? That sounds like a lot.

ETA: Then you get past the sensationalist headline and find the real story

The annual survey of roughly 5,000 beekeepers showed the 33% dip from April 2016 to April 2017. The decrease is small compared to the survey's previous 10 years, when the decrease hovered at roughly 40%. From 2012 to 2013, nearly half of the nation's colonies died.

The death of a colony doesn't necessarily mean a loss of bees, explains vanEngelsdorp, a project director at the Bee Informed Partnership. A beekeeper can salvage a dead colony, but doing so comes at labor and productivity costs.

CRISPR May Not Be Nearly as Precise as We Thought

I don't think this is that surprising. DNA is astonishingly complex and trying to make a cut at a unique and specific chemical bond is hard in a chemical that is orders of magnitude less complex.

we use CRISPR heavily in mice. I wrote some software that is used as part of a high throughput pipeline to develop large numbers of gene "knock outs". There is a lot of work that goes into designing CRISPR guides that minimize the potential for off-target effects -- and then there is downstream lab work to "verify" that the deletion happened where they expect. I'm not quite ready to have CRISPR used on me, but I think that time is coming soon...

Science in the US died a little more today.

Meh, science is transnational. If the US divests then whoever picks up the slack will be the big winner. The US may decide to be the Ming dynasty and go up its own as-s, but if so the species will march forward somewhere else.

We had a good run, but as we fall behind the world in freedom and tolerance, we should also fall behind in science. The most powerful country should be the most free. If the US turns into a police state it should become a poor, failed state. Not as punishment. Not even for the laughs. Just to protect the rest of the world.

In so many ways the US blew it in 1980. There was a clear choice but the orcs rose up, and since then it's been a freefall towards neofeudalism and a new Dark Age. We can pull out of it but with every year the damage is probably five years to fight our way back, which means we've already taken a 150-year dead end and counting.

The US may have been marked for death right from the beginning by its founding by racist sociopaths, who knew and cared enough to demand and enshrine liberty, but still had a sickness that prevented them from seeing the misery and enslavement right in their kitchens. That combined with the fundies always meant America has lived its entire history with 2 strikes. We only got to fail once, and when we did in 1980 that might have been it.

But look, my genes are Slav and Viking. This place was quite nice for a century, but 2 generations down the line it might just be another Old Country.
