Isn't 1,000,000 miles about where the Webb Telescope will be located??

Fortunately for the telescope, it will only occupy one particular point in space 1,000,000 miles from earth of which there are a few more.

While true, there are fun things about the Lagrange points that make them a little more likely to be intersected than a random point in space. L2 is on the ecliptic which is (relatively) close to the plane of the solar system (and the Sun's equator -- not a coincidence) which means random asteroids are very likely to spend most of their time in that plane. Also, since L2 is specifically opposite the sun, it's also the point which is most vulnerable to stuff in the solar plane coming in from outside Earth orbit.

But I still want the lasers.

While looking up the size of the Webb telescope, I stumbled upon the fact that it will be placed into a small "halo" orbit around L2. Apparently, one of the other fun features of Lagrange points is that they can be orbited, despite there being no mass there to orbit.

This is going to take some time to digest. After a long and tiring day, I think I'm going to go lose myself in a beer and Wikipedia.

Wow. That is... that seems wrong, but I guess not.

Some of the nastiest kind of hardcore engineering porn was on Nova this week. It was about the design and building of the new Chernobyl tomb. Check it out.

Wharton Business School article. Psychology professor at NYU: Smart phones are deliberately designed to be addictive.

The technology that we consume now is delivered in ways that are very mindful. The companies that produce the devices that bring the technology and bring the information to us are very mindful about what they’re doing. They are trying their best to ensure that we spend a lot of time on their devices. That’s how they make money. It is a business, and they’re very careful about the way they design the tools that deliver content to us.
....
It’s very important to define addiction when you’re talking about behavioral addiction because it is very different from the typical definition of addiction.

We usually think of addiction as the brain’s or the body’s response to a certain substance. This is not what we’re talking about here. We’re talking about experiences and behaviors. But what’s interesting is that the body and the brain respond pretty much the same way to these experiences. You see the same release of dopamine, which is a chemical in the brain that makes us feel good. And you see the same behavioral responses.
....Without a [smart]phone you lose contact with people, which for humans is one of the worst things that can happen. We would rather have physical pain than social pain and being ostracized, ignored or left out.
....the thrill you get ... when it works for you ... that feels really good.

....

social media is an inherently negative vehicle for communicating information because you are either anonymous or removed from other people. You never have that feedback. It’s easy to bully.

Synopsis: We are on the cusp of a generational divide that will become more even extreme over the next 10 - 20 years; an entire generation raised without knowing how to behave in face-to-face interactions, because they don't have enough of them on a day-to-day basis to learn through experience how to behave face-to-face in a socially-acceptable manner.

TIJUANA, Mexico — It was not the first time Robert L. Brownell Jr. had seen a dead vaquita, the rare and endangered porpoise that was lying on the stainless-steel necropsy table inside the Tijuana Zoo on Monday. But it might well be one of the last.

Mr. Brownell, a senior scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, had in effect discovered the porpoise, finding the first full, dead specimen in 1966. The world’s smallest member of the cetacean grouping, which includes whales and dolphins, the vaquita was the most recent cetacean to be recognized by modern science.

Now it may well become the latest to go extinct.

A high-level, bilateral panel of Mexican and American scientists met this week and is expected to announce that it believes efforts to save the animal have, essentially, failed.

Another species gone by the fiercest predator on the planet.

Science: Only when it's convenient to the New World Order agenda. https://www.infowars.com/netflix-ed...-segment-saying-chromosomes-determine-gender/

Or, you know...changing the conclusion now that we've retested our original hypothesis, and found it to contradict with the advancements made in our understanding of biology and genetic science in the last 20 years.

Much like how Flat-Earthers are now rightfully viewed as kooks.
