If you're a former military man, then answer this: on the battlefield, do they train you that the best outcome will occur if every soldier just worries about his own personal survival and objectives, or do they teach that you need to work together at the platoon, company, and division levels?

Think it might have been the same for a small band of prehistoric humans trying to survive the battlefield of nature? We are descended from ancestors who figured out that by working together, a village could be greater than the sum of its parts. Humans who preferred every-man-for-himself did not fare so well, so altruism is now baked into our DNA. We no longer have to band together to defeat sabre-toothed tigers, but humanity still faces an enemy that requires us to work together and look out for each other - ourselves. If we all started acting purely selfishly, that means no more stopping at red lights, no more property rights, no more governments. How long would we last under those conditions? We're not altruistic because of morality or religion. We're altruistic because it causes us to survive. Peoples without altruism were eliminated from the gene pool many millenia ago.

Ok, I delayed in responding to this, because I wanted to be able to take time to respond, because I very much respect you and your opinion, I really do. I was impressed and your response caused me to have to think about this further. But thinking too much, well, that usually results in my getting all long winded, lol. And I took too much time, now I just decided to respond without putting a ton of thought into it.

Thing is, all of what you described is nothing more than SELF, looking out for SELF. Banding together isn't truly sacrificing anything especially when all involved benefit from doing it. Your idea of what it means to act purely selfishly is naïve, at best. To be honest, your so called definition of a person or individual acting "selfishly", is actually an example of a person or individual acting STUPIDLY. It's stupid to go lone wolf when that will get you killed. It's TOTALLY selfish behavior to join a group when that group offers you more safety and security. DUH. Nothing SELFLESS or charitable about it. You claim its people without altruism that were eliminated from the gene pool? I claim it was people who were FAR LESS intelligent. Nothing to do with TRUE compassion or SELFLESSNESS.

I'm addressing the issue of compassion shown to those who DO NOT contribute to the betterment of society.

You have listed people who did, by joining a group or community, contribute to the good of the larger community, AND THEMSELVES most importantly.

I'm asking why we have gone from doing that, to extending our compassion, our charity, our taxes, etc., to those who have proven that they are a DETRIMENT to society or are WORTHLESS and do nothing to contribute to society. The LAZY, the criminals, etc..

People from around the globe were pulling for the flat earther's rocket launch to be successful.

Alas, the rocket did not launch.

Please read this (the book, not the wiki page) and then get back to us: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Selfish_Gene

Whatever genes have survived to this point in history are, by definition, "selfish" because they're the genes that created traits that allow the genes to survive through the generations. The amount of compassion that we have is simply the mechanism that our genes exploited to ensure that they (the genes) survived. In other words, our genes are selfish; we* are not.

*current GOP members excluded. There are always mutations, most of which are (mercifully) choked out by the tried-and-true mainline genes.

I'm addressing the issue of compassion shown to those who DO NOT contribute to the betterment of society.

LynahFan already fully anticipated my science rebuttal, so I'll handle the arts rebuttal.

There are two discrete concepts conflated in your statements. This means you are wrong in two interestingly different ways.

Compassion is the realization that every one of us is part of society and contributes to it. That is the ground of the genuine universal love that crops up again and again in human culture and which most of us in the West are most familiar with as Christian Universal Love, "agape." So, from the point of view of compassion, your statement is meaningless. No one does not deserve compassion, by definition. Compassion is a responsibility that is placed on us by our humanity -- we do not excel by demonstrating it, we can only fail to be strong enough to show it.

But I believe what you are describing is mercy. Mercy implies the object does not "deserve it." When we help the person who is by even our own estimation utterly unredeemable, that is mercy. You are arguing that mercy is anti-Darwinian and this frfom a species point of view a mistake.

I don't have a glib answer (JUST THIS ONCE) for why you are wrong. I have a really, really long one. I'm on about her a lot, I know, but my secret girlfriend Martha Nussbaum writes about this in her work, in particular The Fragility of Goodness and Anger, Mercy, Revenge: The Complete Works of Lucius Annaeus Seneca. Somewhere in those thousands of pages, and other works by other authors, and personal contemplation, I found my answer to why you are wrong, and why mercy -- far from being stupid -- is indeed the smartest idea people have ever had.

Another, much more accessible, place to go is the Oresteia cycle by Aeschylus from the 5th century BCE, in particular the final play "The Eumenides," which is the Greek origin story of justice and the introduction into human institutions of a method of "impersonal" mercy. That's where I would go if I were you and interested in learning a perspective that contradicts yours. Note also that this work anticipates the strongest arguments against mercy, and does so in a fair and intellectually stimulating, not to mention poetically sublime, manner, so it's good to know even if you wish to persist in being wrongheaded.

Post scriptum: And by the way, everybody, this is why I'm such an "elitist." Contrary to the defensiveness it provokes, it's got nothing to do with rank ordering people or unhumble bragging. (That is an ancillary service provided free of charge strictly for my personal amusement.) It's the recognition that the parts of human life that I have found, by experimentation, as the deepest, most profound, most moving, most satisfying, and ultimately most "important," whatever that means, have come to me in large part because of elite education. But it's even more important to realize that this education is available to every person every day through autodidactism. I had only a moderate understanding of Greek tragedy in my actual college days. Everything I've read and learned on compassion and mercy has been subsequently as an adult on my own time and for the pure joy of it (or, more exactly, my utter boredom during 2000 hours of work per year), which means any person could do the same thing.

It's now showing 3:10pm in the live stream.

For a Bond villain he's doing a lousy job controlling the weather.

Okay, so the second stage might not have landed successfully, but how much of Apollo or the Shuttle program was re-used?

This is a pretty big step forward. So close to crewed space travel via SpaceX.

Also... flat Earth rocket boy in Nevada can suck it:

Look at that curve!

Did 2nd stage fail or just the camera?

Maybe not soooooo close. Reports are Falcon Heavy will never carry people. BFR will carry people; Falcon Heavy will be for "durable goods."

But closer, certainly. The more in the race the better. We need a new 1492 and we need it yesterday before the apes destroy us all.

They made it sound like it was the camera, but there hasn't been a race to Tweet to show proof, so I'm guessing Starman didn't survive the ride in his Tesla Roadster.
*edit* I'm mistaken. Starman and his Tesla are currently circling our Planet before one last burn to put in on a path for Mars orbit. Elon says the cameras on the car should provide amazing views of Mars. The second stage booster is rumored to have missed it's target and was lost. */edit*

I always stopped to watch Shuttle launches; NASA has always been an interest of mine. Is it wrong to think this was on par with a Mercury or Gemini launch in importance?

Well, a Mercury or Gemini test, anyway.

Aint gwan matter until we send some dumbas-s flyboy up there again and get the apes' corpuscles moving. Lie to them and tell them it's for weapons. Send a Ram truck up there to spread Bud Lite on the moon. Maybe lynch somebody of color in the pre-launch festivities.

Just get the money to develop the theory and build the tech to get us away from the orcs and then let them burn their rock to a Jesus cinder.
