Saw this on 60 Minutes yesterday. The Dutch had a bad Storm Surge in the 50's. So they changed the way they do things and they haven't had a storm surge problem since. But here in the US we just keep rebuilding everything exactly the same and keep funneling billions of dollars into things that we know will eventually be destroyed.

Why? Why is America this ****ing dumb?

Saw this on 60 Minutes yesterday. The Dutch had a bad Storm Surge in the 50's. So they changed the way they do things and they haven't had a storm surge problem since. But here in the US we just keep rebuilding everything exactly the same and keep funneling billions of dollars into things that we know will eventually be destroyed.

Why? Why is America this ****ing dumb?

Well, you gave us the link that stated the NC state legislature banned the use of science in affecting is laws. I really think we should leave NC to its own devices and see where that gets them. Maybe then they'd understand what Puerto Rico has gone through this past year.

Well, their entire country is under sea level and they don't flood. Puerto Rico could be built that way. New Orleans, The East Coast. Florida, etc. Houston for cripes sake. Houston is a newer city and look at how bad they ****ed that up. It's like blind mice engineered the whole ****ing city.

That much rain in a small area is going to flood, no matter what you do. You have to realize that the river is going to flood and flood bigly at some point and allow for pristine flood plains to allow the water to spill out safely.

For our brethren along the shore, they're called barrier islands for a reason.

New Orleans is a different case. It should have been Venice, but....

Uh, Puerto Rico would not benefit by that. It's not an island that is flat and broad like Florida or Houston is. It's a very mountainous island, where there are a lot of dips and holes and rivers where water all goes to at the same time. And it's also very exposed, so that it's hardly can break up the winds- which end up being far more powerful at +4000ft (the highest point in Puerto Rico is 4390 ft).

A lot of the east coast is very much like that, too- where dykes and whatnot would have no effect at all.

What we should actually focus on is floodwater flow. And not obstruct that, like in Houston.

I also don't think we are stupid, as we can easily come up with solutions that work. Ok, we are not stupid on a technical front. Where we are stupid is being so focused on money, profits, and no taxes that kills us.

That will never happen again, as people don't care what they are getting with their tax money, other than the notion that money is being taken from them. And to MANY- that money is going to benefit people who they don't like. Being rational isn't getting us anywhere either. This country is headed down the toilet bowl and nothing is going to stop it. Greed comes to roost eventually. Kudos to the US for lasting as long as it did.
