Why would a better credit score matter for the price you pay for a non-loan? The idea of a credit score is the risk of you paying the terms, but if a purchase is one time that risk is zero for everyone.

Because of target marketing. Companies have determined that some customers are more valuable than others...a decade ago Best Buy famously said we're 'going to be firing a lot of customers'. They got in hot water for that.
There is something called share of wallet and consumer lifetime value. Sophisticated companies know that rich, free spending and loyal customers are super valuable - and one's that refer business. All of this can be indicated via 'personal credit scores'. Whether there would be a backlash in this country, its hard to say...but every savvy business would love to get their hands on this.
