Sacred Heart 2012-2013: Simply the Worst

Did you ever see a Quinnipiac game at Northford Ice Pavilion? How comparable is it?

Milford is the only venue that can give The JAR (Bentley) and Olympia (AIC) a run for their money for the title of worst dump in D-I. In my opinion, Northford (Quinnipiac) was a relative palace by comparison.

Fair enough. Only reason I asked is because I've been to Northford before for a women's game, but not any of the others.

In 1965-66, RPI went 3-19. The victories were over Middlebury and Hamilton, both D-3 (ECAC-II back then), and Penn, playing club hockey. They were 0-13 against teams that were D-I at the time, and none were closer than three goals. (Five losses were also against teams that were then ECAC-II and one against a Canadian school.) So by today's standards they had a "perfect" record of 0-13.

Yeah, but 13 games isn't really comparable to a 30+ game season. Also, Sacred Heart LOST to D-III St. Thomas in an exhibition before their season started. SHU does have two ties, though, so they have that going for them.

New question: Is there any way the coach can keep his job if the teams wins zero games?

The capacity of the Milford rink is 1,000 with seats on one side, my hometown rink, one town over holds 2200 for high school. There are many better places in New Haven and Fairfield counties that they might be able to rent.

What would be REALLY wild is if they ended up getting the autobid.

But SHU didn't lose any games 16-1. :D

Re: Sacred Heart 2012-2013: Simply the Worst

I have always been amazed that they are a D-1 program, no local support whatsoever. They play in a very small rink better suited to high school teams. (occasionally will step up to Harbor Yard in Bridgeport) With the improvements to alot of college hockey facilities, it must be very hard to recruit good D-1 talent to the school. I live in the next town over from the rink and have never been to an SHU home game at the Milford Ice Pavilion. Not really sure of the reason for the sudden record crash either.

Bentley has recruited really well the past few years, yet we still play all home games in a dump of a rink the next town over. But, we now have for the first time a passionate student fan base, which our players really appreciate. That makes all the difference. Sure, we would like to have a rink on campus, but it is what it is.

Re: Sacred Heart 2012-2013: Simply the Worst

Sacred Heart has not gotten bad crowds for the Milford rink. One or two sections of students who do cheer at times, and often a band. And they do get a fair number of older fans and families. Now the Bridgeport crowds are an absolute joke. The place feels so empty and you could count the fans easily. Hopefully the players enjoy the experience and the AHL team are doing them a favor. college hockey has me spoiled for cost of games. Bridgeport was charging $10 for parking if you were just going to the AHL game. Luckily, get there for the Sacred Heart game, and it is free.

Re: Sacred Heart 2012-2013: Simply the Worst

Sacred Heart gave up 13 goals this weekend and got swept by Robert Morris, bringing their record to 0-24-2.

I thought there was a team in the mid-60s that went 0-XX-1. But I don't remember who. For some reason I thought it was Colgate, but it isn't listed that was on USCHO's database. I even think Sports Illustrated did a piece on it one time when some other team had put together a long losing streak. They talked about the 1 tie and how it "ruined" an imperfect season.

Loved that year. Clarkson ended up second in the nation after losing to MI State in the finals (having beaten them in the RS). Better dead than red!!

I remember that too although I was sort of happy that Clarkson lost after beating RPI 16-1.

Not even D-III. That was the CIS St. Thomas Thommies.

Article on Sacred Heart who didn't lose last weekend because the were digging out from 38 inches of snow! Apparently there are three winless college hockey teams in history:

The Pioneers have eight games left to find that elusive first win and avoid becoming the fourth Division I men’s team to go through a season without a win. Alaska went 0-22 in 1980-81, Colorado College was 0-18 in 1961-62 and Brown finished the 1960-61 season at 0-20.

So CC went from winning the national championship in 1957 to zero wins four or five years later? Quite a feat. Didn't know how bad CC was from the late 50's up until Lou Chia got there.

I didn't think of that. That has to be the worst winless season because of the height that the program fell. At least two of the others were start ups. Brown just had one lousy year but didn't come from the heights of a national championship.

Re: Sacred Heart 2012-2013: Simply the Worst

Sacred Heart had a pretty rough weekend, even for the comically low standards they have already set for themselves. They got trounced by American International 4-0 and 9-1. Think about that. They allowed 9 goals to American International. And the one goal SHU scored was on a 5 on 3 PP.

I am rooting for this team to get a win, but it doesn't look likely. They are now 0-26-2.
