Rumors from out West

Re: Rumors from out West

IIRC, UAF used local linesmen and flew in refs.
Uhm that's how it is in most places, just about all the linesman are local and the refs fly in to each series, schedules are setup far enough in advance to decrease costs of air travel.

I would like him to elaborate on this. Teams folding are going to be teams with no upgrades to the ice rinks. My concerns in future would be LSSU, UAA, UAH, and NMU.

You are correct. Schools need to upgrade or they will fold. Sorry I should have been more clear.

Re: Rumors from out West

Playing D1 out of Alaska schools is"way expensive". Not only do the colleges have to "imports" referee's, I'm told that they also have to pay at least part of the visiting teams air fare & lodging. In addition
to that, they travel to the mainland for weeks at a time, oftentimes brining their own tutors. It is a MAJOR investment which I'm sure is reviewed each and every year.

Probably some state subsidies, though. Don't the toll booths pay you there? :p

Re: Rumors from out West

I'm not sure if UAA and UA_ are state schools or not, but if they are, wouldn't that sort of be expected? ;)

Not if you're a fiscal conservative who wants to eliminate all non-essential government spending, such as public school and public college sports.

And what if, instead of tuition being the pricing, they were to use student activity fees? I happen to know of a certain college that could be a good model for that... ;)

Re: Rumors from out West

I heard that BIG and NCHC were considering sharing refs. Part of the reason I was told was because BIG has less games and they were going to have week day games. I heard that about three months ago So what 4Four4 is saying seems possible to me. I also know many of the coaches were not happy with the officals in the WCHA and how they were handled so the idea these leagues are fightting for the best refs makes sense. I know there are quite a few former WCHA coaches who are happier than a pig is s**t that they never have to deal with pappa sheppard ever again.

Correct.

Re: Rumors from out West

I would hope all three leagues share all the refrees.

I highly doubt there are exclusivity contracts because of other leagues (such as the AHL, ECHL, possibly High School hockey in Minnesota), but that's going to be up to where the referees try out in August.

Funny, this is NOT what I heard. Kind of the opposite really.

Re: Rumors from out West

The ref thing is so overrated. They all suck. It isn't going to matter.

I disagree. If the leagues make people accountable things will improve. It will never be as good as the pro's because those are the most talented ref's in the world and get paid a ton of dough to do what they do.

Popular sentiment declares authorities, rules, and accountability are all inconsequential, and not just in college hockey. Anarchy is making a comeback.
