Rugby - Union, League, etc.

So i've had the Rugby World Cup on in the background while going through paperwork this week. I've got to say, now that I somewhat understand the rules and know why play starts/stops/continues it makes a lot more sense. Anyways, not sure if anyone else watches this at any level, but it's interesting.

Much more athleticism than American football, but I think there's significantly less "chess" type strategy you have with play calls in football. Seems like there might be more of that in rugby league (vs. rugby union) but obviously I haven't seen much (any?) of the former.

Either way, watching an entire team of linebackers and tight-ends play is incredible. The athleticism of these guys, even the giants, is insane. The commentators have mentioned several times the guys who literally can't wear socks above their calves. Like farking hams. I don't know how these guys don't have several career-ending injuries every game.

Ireland play Scotland this weekend. Should be an absolute donnybrook.

ETA: If you have a chance, watch a game with the rules pulled up on your screen. https://www.world.rugby/the-game/laws/home
They do a spectacular job with video examples to help understand the rules.

I will be honest that I find it somewhat difficult to get into rugby due to its upper class roots and still somewhat pervasive upper class culture. I can watch it if it’s on and I do respect the athletes but I hate that the World Cup is buried on Peacock. Kind of doesn’t help the US didn’t qualify either (and USA Rugby and MLR being an absolute gongshow).

Union and League are really two different sports though. League is closer to Canadian and American football on the spectrum than it is to Union.

I mean. If you hate the upper class roots then I'm sure you're not an American football or ice hockey fan, right?

I think I phrased it wrong. I meant the “gentlemanly” upper class twit culture that very much exists in rugby still. Rugby Union didn’t allow professional players until 1995 (a major reason why Rugby League exists).
