RPI vs. Union (Mayors Cup) Saturday, 1/25/2014

Re: RPI vs. Union (Mayors Cup) Saturday, 1/25/2014

Per WaP, Game DQs for Zalewski, Curadi, Bodie, & Lichtenwald. All will be out next Friday.

I'm really curious to know what Bennett gets. It MUST be at least a few games. Torts just got 6 for standing in the other team's way (I know the NHL is different), but Bennett was actively trying to assault Appert and Vines.

I expect the league's office to make a statement on this situation Monday, if not tomorrow.

So two games in a row where RPI does not win the first period, but then wins the second and third periods, and the game. I thought all opponents knew that all they had to do was survive the first period and the game was theirs?

Are coach suspensions handled only by the ECAC or does the NCAA step in? Knowing Stewie, Appert will sit 5 and Bennett get off with a small fine if it's up to the league.

Given this was a non-con, I don't know. I'm sure the NCAA COULD step in, but I'm sure they'll defer to the league since this isn't squeakball.

I just wanted to throw my couple of pennies in.
I just got home from the game. It was a totally classless act by Union at the end of the game, Bodie definitely started the whole thing. There were at least 4 or 5 fights that broke out, I'm surprised that Dolan didn't get one of the gamers. He definitely dropped his gloves to fight. There was so much going on it was tough to follow everything. But I definitely saw the Bennett- Appert confrontation. Seth just went to shake his hand and for some reason Bennett takes a swing at him and Vines. No idea what was said. They did try to have the teams shake hands after all of this, but after a couple of minutes, the officials just sent the Union players to the locker room while the RPI players remained on the ice to accept the Mayors Cup trophy. Unbelievable.
Oh and BTW, the cup is presented by the Albany mayor to the winning teams mayor, in this case Troy's mayor.

Re: RPI vs. Union (Mayors Cup) Saturday, 1/25/2014

I particularly liked when the teams lined up (finally) to shake hands after Bennett had called his team off the ice once and they had come back out. Appert went down the line and was motioning for the team to cool it and shake hands, then Bennett stormed back out of the locker room and started screaming at his team and motioning for them to get off the ice.

Everyone can say the refs called off that handshake but the teams were lined up and ready for it until Bennett came back out of the locker room.

Union's always a bunch of sore whatever-the-result.

Rick Bennett, everybody.

Re: RPI vs. Union (Mayors Cup) Saturday, 1/25/2014

I was not able to listen to the game-they do not allow me to bring any devices into surgery, which was far more complicated for me to perform than I had ever suspected -but Jenny was out in the waiting room and listening and relaying the entire game to me in bits and pieces. Sounds like a real nail biter and the last 2 minutes we were holding on for dear life. The post game stuff should never have happened but cudos to the RPI boys who stood their ground. Just saw the videos posted of the fighting and it did not look to me like any of our guys started anything. Not sure what the refs saw but if this fight was instigated then the team that did that, deserves the bulk of the punishment. Something like this-could be the spark that brings this team totally together as a unit. Proud of this team and proud of our coach.

I know it has been a long time since you could celebrate a win over Union, congratulations on the win, but try to be factual. First I was at the game, second the video clearly shows Matt Bodie, after time expires, standing at the point position when you see Zalewski start charging full speed towards Bodie. Even if you have never seen a hockey game before, this is not done after the games final whistle unless that player has something in mind other than shaking hands. It is true that Bodie put up his stick to protect himself but no fair minded person would call that an instigation when it was just a reaction to an unprovoked attack.

All hockey coaches know they have a responsibility to control their teams especially after the game is over. No responsible coach would send or allow their team to charge unto the ice when there is an altercation going on as the RPI team did. In fact Union players stayed on their own side of the ice until it was clear that the RPI team was assaulting the Union line that was there. They then went into the melee to protect their players from this mismatch. In the video you will clearly see many Union players trying to separate their teammates from some RPI players who were attempting to draw them into fights. Anyone who has watched Union hockey with a critical eye will be aware of coach Bennett's requirement that his players play in a disciplined manner. Players who don't play in that manner are no longer in the lineup the next game. Matt Bodie has shown tremendous growth in his years at Union both as a hockey player and as leader. To accuse him of instigating is either ignorance of facts or a bald lie.

Coach Bennett is an outstanding coach who made a mistake becoming outraged by the RPI teams lack of discipline and thuggishness. He probably assumed this behavior leads back to their coach.

Obviously you weren't watching closely. You didn't see Bodie go after one of RPI's star players in Brock Higgs with a cross check to the head. That's not protecting yourself. As for hockey coaches with the responsibility you desired, that's exactly what Appert was doing going on the ice beckoning his team to return to the bench. As for "charging on the ice", I'd like you to remember this any time a team goes onto the ice to congratulate their goalie after a win. Stop looking like a victim.

LOL. This is probably the funniest thing I've read today.

To paraphrase, a man sees what he wants to see and disregards the rest.
