PUCKMAN RULES!!!
Re: RPI vs. Harvard, Shillelagh Tournament, 11/28/15
I agree with all of that, but my complaint is the penalties against us that go uncalled. Last night, I called all the penalties against us. Because they were so obvious. What we don't get, are the holding and interference penalties that our opponents lay on us.
Also, there are no other goalies in the league that get run into as much as ours, and most times, nothing is done about it.
We need to stay away from the obvious/dumb penalties.
Ralph you are correct. It has been for most of the years I can remember. Back in the 1960's i mentioned to someone at a tournament that i was a big RPI fan and he simply said that was the school known for playing Hatchet Hockey. But there are penalties that need to be taken and those that just give you the reputation of taking bad ones. Trust me, the officials all have a preconceived notion about every team when they take the ice. Some schools with long hockey histories are always given the benefit of the doubt and that includes a couple in the ECAC. This is one reason that we get called for a penalty simply by the sound of the hit. All an official has to do is turn around (after not seeing the play at all) and see a player crumpled on the ice after a loud sounding hit, and bingo, it had to be our fault.
The officials are only human (well, most of them) and they most certainly are influenced by what they expect to happen. They can call interference, hooking or even tripping and roughing any time they choose. it is sort of like football. I have never seen a play where holding could not have been called on an offensive lineman or a defensive back and some of these calls completely change the outcome of a game.
