Re: RPI visits Q! Thursday, January 21st

It is going to take a superior effort tonight to beat one of the best teams in the country. It is a quick turn around for them having played Tuesday night, so maybe that will help us a little.
Just go out and give it our best shot.

Lets go red!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: RPI visits Q! Thursday, January 21st

Focus has to be on figuring out how to score. QU has shut down just about everyone. of course we have to deal with their top line but if we can hold this to a 1 goal game anything can happen. Kazzie has to both hot and near perfect but we have to find a way to put something into their net and we will have to do it with a number of injuries to top players. They outshoot just about everyone and seem to be especially tough in the third period. They get called for fewer penalties than the opponents and they score well on special teams. This is just not the kind of statistics that we match up well with. On paper a true David Vs. Goliath but perhaps SA can equip the team with a bunch of slings and stones.

Re: RPI visits Q! Thursday, January 21st

Some tidbits; FACE-OFFS RECENTLY: Since January 1, the Engineers have won 50.7% of their draws, including a team-best 70.0% from junior Jake Wood ... Classmate Riley Bourbonnais is second at 62.9%, while fellow junior Jimmy DeVito has won 56.1% of his face-offs....................... SCORING FIRST: RPI is 10-1-3 when scoring first this season and just 2-6-1 when conceding the game’s first goal.............. PUT ME IN COACH: The Engineers are 8-2-4 when freshman defenseman Tommy Grant is in the lineup and just 4-5-1 when he is scratched...... http://www.rpiathletics.com/documents/2016/1/20//GameNotes_QU.pdf?id=2411

If Kazzie has a game like he had vs. Cornell we can win. If like the game against Colgate, we won't.

IMHO a "pro hoc ergo propter hoc" fallacy. He has played well, but ...

Re: RPI visits Q! Thursday, January 21st

After seeing Quinnipiac a few times this year the one thing that seemed to bother them is real physical play. Clarkson really brought the physicality and Quinnipiac didn't seem to have much interest in returning it to the same level. They continued to try to use their speed and skill to work their way around the defense. Obviously this depends on how the refs want to call it tonight but a strong forecheck and finishing hits seemed to disrupt Q's timing and flow. Of course they had their chances still but it was nothing compared to when I saw them play Harvard or UConn when they were allowed to skate up the ice and into the zone seemingly at will.

They are not a big team of forwards. They are an extremely quick team with one outstanding line and a second very good line. Their defense is bigger and their goaltending is as good as it gets. One other thing - they seem to just never give up and have scored late in games to tie and then win. We could play our best but if we let up at all in the third period (which has happened in more games than i can remember this year), we will have very little chance to win. We have asked for a 60 minute effort in the past but tonight it is mandatory. It also goes without saying that we cannot take stupid penalties as Q special teams are extremely good. It is all a matter of matching up. Some teams we just seem to match up well with and others not and this is regardless of how good the teams are.

RB: Could care less if this is just a coincidence or totally unrelated. I just want to see him continue to play well. He is one of the boys we have back on defense who has the size and strength to deal with some of these huge forwards that some teams throw at us. When we face 6'6" 235lb boys, we often have a tough time moving them off the puck or out of the crease. Not saying every D man has to be Curadi size, but I cannot see how we can handle these big boys with a small defense crew.
