RPI-Union Home and Home (11/12, 11/13)

Re: RPI-Union Home and Home (11/12, 11/13)

Disgraceful call. Hagwell should be ashamed of the refs he runs out there but lest I forget he has no shame. Appert took the team off the ice without shaking hands and well he should have because Leaman and his band of trapping men took cheap shots at the end of game. He must have learned that playing at that powerhouse Cortland. We will lose Seth Appert if the ECAC keeps this up. Coach was off the wall at the end of the game. Gates was looking to make that call. Who calls that at the end of a game without looking for it. There is a mound of evidence that the ECAC has a bias against Seth. Exhibit 1 - disallowing a goal with 4 seconds. Disgraceful... utterly disgraceful.
You mad? Everyone always blames everything on the officials. There was about 59 minutes and 56 seconds of the game RPI could have scored another goal just saying. If that goal wasn't disallowed you would have had no problem with the officiating, so just take the loss for what its worth and stop blaming officials for losses

it doesn't matter all im saying is that both teams played an even game. I mean you could call that either way and Union could be on the other end of that also. So im just saying there may have been other times where RPI could have scored before that and this issue wouldn't be so big

Coaches agreed beforehand that hand-shake won't happen until after the 2nd game. Appert mentioned in the post-game that is how they do it in the WCHA when teams play each other on consecutive nights. Appert has more class than to pull a stunt like that. I don't fault Appert for getting mad at the end though. He's a great competitor and wants his team to have the same attitude.

That was an incredibly tight well played game tonight and both teams played with playoff intensity. Should be another doozy tomorrow.

Re: RPI-Union Home and Home (11/12, 11/13)

Wow, I just saw the video. Granted it's from a distance, and hand held, but....I don't see anything resembling goalie interference. No one appears to be close enough to be interfering.
Ed Weaver at the Record also says that the consensus was 'good goal'.
That is 4 goals waved off by my count, each of them costing RPI a point. Now one seems to be legit (Rabbani's @ Harvard). But the other three seem to be of the 'referee's discretion/judgment' variety. When I reffed (granted low level and many years ago), you had to be **** sure to wave off a goal. Reactions were usually loud and hot, but driven by disappointment, not disagreement. The decisions that were taken stood up. Unfortunately, this latest one has gone in the books, but it appears that will not stand up to scrutiny.
All that said, what can be done? Sadly, not much. TBTB don't seem interested on addressing the poor and inconsistent refereeing in this league.
Bah, I'm off to get my coffee. This is no way to start a day.

Re: RPI-Union Home and Home (11/12, 11/13)

I stand corrected about the hand shaking at the end. Coach is a class guy. We are proud of him in Troy. Doesn't it sound like ken wants to dime Seth out to the league. C'mon Ken stop the home job stuff. As a reporter don't you want to see if it was a goal or not. Isn't that why you are there, to be an objective observer. To get the story right. Sometimes I wonder....

Are you for real? Tell me you didn't post that lame response to this situation. Tell that to the kids, coaches and parents of RPI that worked hard all week to get stiffed by Hagwell's hacks. You must be a Union supporter and that is cool but tell me you didn't trivalize that call like that. Tell me you care about the integerity of the game more than that.

Well said AspyDad-the key word is integrity! Integrity of the game, of the people involved and in doing the right thing!

Re: RPI-Union Home and Home (11/12, 11/13)

I was shocked and appalled at Ken Schott's lack of journalistic integrity at the presser last night. Instead of his response being something to the effect that Seth will get in trouble over showing the video it should have been him asking to see the tape. Isn't that what journalist do, look for the truth. Stop being a stooge for the league and the home team, Mr. Schott. Report the facts, they are stubborn but that is your job. Appert was right to show the video and not gloss over the fact that his gentlemen got hosed by Hagwell and his refs. If you frequent the board Mr. Schott, I would love to hear what you have to say for yourself. Get the story right and dig for the facts.

Re: RPI-Union Home and Home (11/12, 11/13)

I'm a big proponent of video cameras over the goal/crease/lower slot area so the correct calls on goals & goalie interference can be made. Union had a game a couple years ago with Harvard where there was a goalie interference question and the video replay (the game was covered by TW cable) showed that there was interference and the refs made the correct call based on that. I was at the far end of the rink last night and couldn't tell what was happening, but if it was a good goal it should have counted. Another U/RPI game with a last second goal (not exactly a rare event) would have made for an even more exciting game. Getting the calls right on goals scored should be a paramount priority.. but I guess thats just me.

Thanks for the honesty. nice post.

Re: RPI-Union Home and Home (11/12, 11/13)

OK, if it's time to be honest, I'll admit that I've never read the college hockey rule book, so I can only guess what I think is or isn't a penalty, and I'm not mentioning this in regard to last night's game alone. I think I can pretty well recognize a trip or a hook but have to admit I've never read the definitions. I correctly identified a few penalties last night, or at least what the refs deemed penalties, but admittedly either didn't see or recognize most of them. I frankly don't know what constitutes goal tender interference though it might be more common sense than I suppose or as one of our Supreme Court justices wrote in considering what legally constitutes pornography, "I may not be able to define it, but I know it when I see it." I agree that replay would be a huge plus and I believe its mandated for play in the league starting next year. When available it has helped to get a lot of calls correct, it's just frustrating that it is now available so sporadically.

Re: RPI-Union Home and Home (11/12, 11/13)

needed this win. I hate to go into next games 1-3. Both the five minute major and the ot crosschecking were well deserved. I think the refs could not believe Union wanted to go two men down in ot that was the delay. If time expired in the third before the goal was scored then the red light could not have gone on.

Re: RPI-Union Home and Home (11/12, 11/13)

so how bout them refs..
St. Lawrence needs to get some glasses. There were at least two times that the puck was at least a foot away from the goalies, but he blew the whistle. Embarrassing display for the officials.
More proof that video replay needs to become mandatory very soon.
No kidding.
Red light came on. No question this year.
What are you smoking? All I saw was the green light.

Re: RPI-Union Home and Home (11/12, 11/13)

I see that you went to the Nate Leaman school of gracious losing. The goal at the end of Sat's game was a lot less contorversial than the goal on Fri. I spoke to Union fans in Troy and they admitted that they thought it was a goal (Friday's). So credit to them. I also agree with most of the posts in the Union thread about the need for instant replay. Back to Leaman, he whined about treatment of his team in the newspapers. I give him credit for getting their backs but his comment about Seth was out of line for a fellow member of the coaching fraternity. Seth went out of his way to credit Union and their players during the presser but was getting his players back. It was a great series and the reason why teams should play back to back nights. I wish you guys luck and hope to meet again down the road.
