RPI & Union @ Clarkson & SLU (1/31, 2/1)

RPI Head Coach Seth Appert says he was a little surprised he wasn't suspended for his actions Saturday. His full response on News10 ABC at 6

Perhaps something was said in that press conference that the ECAC didn't like?

Re: RPI & Union @ Clarkson & SLU (1/31, 2/1)

Hagwell and Co. forgot to spin the Wheel of Justice.

In all seriousness, as an unbiased outside observer, I feel the now applicable suspensions to be a little more in line with the information/video I have seen. I can see the argument for Bennett being given an extended vacation, however I felt 4-6 games would be the end result. Kerry Fraser called Stewie up to lobby for Appert sitting out one for infringing on PerfectHair. ;)

Oh, how we miss you, GreatLakerMohawk.

I would like to thank SLU for having a free HD stream of the game Friday night, much appreciated.

Re: RPI & Union @ Clarkson & SLU (1/31, 2/1)

You know, SA should be thanking Bubela. Got nothing but praise for a kid that can be reasonable in that situation and look after his coach and what is best for the program.

Very true. Bubela actually did a good job not getting involved AND protecting his coach. He was one of the few level-headed people on the ice during the incident.

Re: RPI & Union @ Clarkson & SLU (1/31, 2/1)

In this weekend's preview video on the RPI Athletics YouTube page, Appert goes out of his way to praise both Bubela and Bokenfohr in their levelheadedness and assistance in his situation.

This is all pure speculation on my part, but I'd venture to guess that Appert could have done a better job of getting his guys off the ice prior to the incident with Bennett. I'd have to look at the videos again to be sure, but the only time I remember seeing him out there was right before Bennett shoved him. Perhaps that's what the league thought...again, just speculating.

That said, is he allowed to be out there to get players off the ice or help break up the scrum? I know coaches in basketball are permitted to do this, but I'm not sure about the NCAA hockey rule on this.

I'm not saying Appert is at fault for anything here, just that he could have gotten out there sooner and tried to get his players off the ice, considering they were significantly outnumbering the Union players during the melee. I have heard but cannot of course confirm, that the officials directed both coaches before the final faceoff, to keep their players on their respective benches until they could organize the handshake line. Mat Bodie's cross check intervened and then it was Allstate, I mean "Mayhem".

[Many of us] speculate that Appert's suspension was more of a message to the team than anything directly related to what he did or did not do: the league "had to do something" to send a message and to put people on notice not to do it again.
