RPI & Union @ Clarkson & SLU (1/31, 2/1)

Re: RPI & Union @ Clarkson & SLU (1/31, 2/1)

Gut prediction: 3-1 loss at Clarkson for RPI, 4-2 win at SLU for RPI.

If I went with my gut for any predictions about RPI I would be on Nexium or Protonix in mega doses. using only my neuroliogics, I pretty much come up with the same as you did-I woul dhope we play a style both nights that just allows for low scoring sluggish games. Our best goal scorer gone for Friday will hurt. Our big boy defenseman gone for the weekend will not be good. I just do not see us having enough scoring bodies out there to compete in a run and gun weekend. Scotty in goal has been just great lately but he will have to be a wall if he is forced to face 35-45 shots in a game. Just a very challenging weekend in a place notoriously difficult for us to play. If the officials have a bad night(how could that possibly happen in the ECAC?) and these games become special teams games-we could be dead meat. SA is going to have be very creative in defensive pairings and forward lines both nights. At this stage-my heart wants wins-but my head is saying settle for any kind of split we can get and just bus home.

I would like to see a tight checking game against "the larries" and take some chances against Clarkson. Open it up a little. Don't know much about Clarkson's speed so I may be way off. Seems like they don't score too much so maybe.....

Doc, you need to go look up SLU's PK efficiency numbers in ECAC play. I'd tell you what they are, but I'm afraid I'd puke on my keyboard.

Clarkson is fast.

As for SLU, I thought I was down on the boys, but Geez guys....

Yes, we are a disaster in our own zone. Period. If one guy makes a good play, someone else will make a bad play and it ends up in the back of the net. ALL 6 guys are to blame or 5/4 on the PK. We have two extremely talented freshmen d-men but all of our d-men seem too focused on offense to play tight in our own zone and stay at home when needed. None of us can explain it. Starting the season 6-2-2 was not a fluke against some prettty good teams like Ferris State, Maine and Northeastern. But this losing streak has been too long to be a fluke either.

We absolutely do suck with the lead which we had in both Clarkson games, and lately we have been trying to come back from being down 2, 3 or 4 goals early in the game.

All I know is that we DO have the talent to turn the corner. But, I think the Colgate game maybe just demonstrated that there is not a lot of hope it will happen this season. In that game we showed poor discipline, it was too easy to score on us, and offensively we are too one dimensional.

I don't know how Carvy and Hurley are handling it, but I know if Joe was still the coach we'd be seeing a youth movement by now. We sort of did last weekend with Raley and Austin each sitting a game, but Wenny did not. I love Wenny and wish him well but he simply has not been sharp this season.

The way we started this season, I would have never thought this kind of regression was possible. But we haven't won since Thanksgiving and our last conference win was early November. You can't sugar coat that. The coaches deserve better. But no one can deliver better other than the lineup they put out there.

Tim: The numbers of course mean something-but over the years we have made opponents become suddenly successful. I cannot tell you how many times our WRPI announcers have to say-"that was his first goal scored"(or that was their first power play goal scored). We have given up goals and even games to players and teams that have been down in the doldrums previously. it is an old RPI adage that we play to the level of the competition. Sometimes we have been a wonder cure for what ails a team. Hopefully this will not be the case this weekend. We have a lot of talent-far more than our record indicates-but a good part of it will be sitting down for at least part if not the entire weekend. Personally I think we have a pretty strong team that has underachieved a bit this year. But not with the boys out who will have to sit. I have no clue what this Mayor's trophy game will do to the chemistry or psyche of this team. I never ever expect anything good out of the North country trip-that way I can be pleasantly surprised at least occassionally.

The only way you could play down to the level we have been playing at since early December is to bring your women's team and fill half your roster spots with the fairer sex. Even that explosive offensive juggernaut Brown had four goals on us in the first before we pulled our heads out of asses. The only way to win games of the type we have been playing is to not let the puck cross our blue line, but with just the bonehead penalties we take we invite all of the teams we play back there for about 5 minutes per period.

Re: RPI & Union @ Clarkson & SLU (1/31, 2/1)

Clarkson gets most lucky of the 2 north country teams with suspensions
Clarkson got lucky Friday night with the RPI suspensions, highlighted by Haggerty. Bodie will be the only missing player for Union Saturday and we have four freshman defenseman who can all play.

Over the many years I have seen us do some incredible things. Trust me-we don't often get a walk in the park. We find all sorts of ways to make most games into nailbiters. I am sure we will take or be given some foolish penalties and make enough poor puck decisions that we long time RPI faithful will be able to have things to criticize. Honestly i hope you are right of course, but 50 years of watching and listening to our boys going up north and always have felt it to be the most difficult part of the season.

Just to make sure I got this right... Haggerty, Zalewski, Curadi, and Dolan are all out Friday night??!

Fixed your post. Zalewski has just been a monster against Clarkson and thank God he is not playing on Friday. As for Bodie being the only missing person on Saturday, the way Clarkson has played against Union the last few years you would have to suspend half of their roster inorder for Clarkson to have a chance at winning. Union is 7-1-0 in their last 8 games against Clarkson and has outscored the knights 41-12  . The games at Cheel have been more competitive than those at it's a Messa Rink with Clarkson actually winning 2-1 last year.

Union was 10-0 vs. RPI under Bennett, so there is a chance. :)

Re: RPI & Union @ Clarkson & SLU (1/31, 2/1)

Those are only cumulative within seasons.

That is what I thought originally, but it was posted so often, and I think never questioned, that I believed it. (Then again, conceivably all of the posts were by FD08.)

The rule book is very ambiguous about it, especially when they also mention about suspensions carrying over between years.

I'm thinking I know what the problem was.

Re: RPI & Union @ Clarkson & SLU (1/31, 2/1)

The way I read the rules, only the penalties for Game DQ's carry over to the next season - meaning if a player got a DQ in the last game of the season then he would have to sit out the first game of the next season (if he was still on the team obviously). I think if the intent was to count progressive DQ's over an entire career, the rule would be more explicit in stating that.

Re: RPI & Union @ Clarkson & SLU (1/31, 2/1)

Unbelievable. What exactly was he supposed to do differently?!
