RPI & Union @ Clarkson & SLU (1/31, 2/1)

Re: RPI & Union @ Clarkson & SLU (1/31, 2/1)

Both team's in season threads have gone radioactive so I thought I'd turn here.

So are both visiting teams sharing the same hotel in Canton as they have done in the past? You won't read about that on TripAdvisor.

All league series are big, but to add to the significance, RPI needs to build off any momentum they may have gained from their win on Saturday, and Union needs to just plain start playing better and deal with the obvious adversity of not having their HC. Frankly, I thought Union only played one or two good periods all weekend and were fortunate to get the 2 points in the Harvard game. They actually looked sluggish in both games and were uncharacteristically sloppy handling the puck, particularly in their zone and in the neutral zone. Also, they failed to cash in on 5 on 3s both against RPI and against Harvard as well as last weekend at UNH. Without Colin Stevens as sharp as he has been, things could have turned, particularly on Friday v. Harvard. Plenty of work to do. They will need a better effort to come away with points this weekend.

SLU has been surprisingly (to me) suspect, what's the main issue? Goaltending? They seem to have plenty of firepower and Greg Carey is, well , Greg Carey. He's a senior, right? Good. Also, Clarkson sorely needs to get back in the swing to stay with the league leaders after two one goal losses this weekend. I have to confess that I don't know much about their team other than the big turnaround they have staged over last season.

I agree that it's a must for RPI to keep the ball rolling, especially on Friday night at Cheel.

You are also correct that Union had a sloppy weekend and they need to tighten things up. I'm not as worried about RB not being behind the bench. The entire Union system is predicated on back-ups stepping in when the starter is out. I think the assistant coaches will be fine...

In the spirit of detente (remember that?), I think Diebold was by far the best player on the ice Saturday. That glove save he made with about 1:30 to go was spectacular and it wasn't the only one. I also thought Colin Stevens was very solid, continuing his good play.

Also, is Ed Weaver scooping the story that Rick Bennett will in fact be making the trip to join SA for that cocktail Thursday?

Ed Weaver has been known to make mistakes. :)

It wouldn't surprise me if, when he wrote the story, the Bennett suspension had not yet been announced.

Main issues: Goaltending, defense, offense, and special teams. Everything else is looking A-OK.

Clarkson lives and dies by the one goal game. If either team can hang around until the third period, they have a shot. Clarkson's last win by more than one goal was October 18, a 4-1 over RIT, since then Clarkson has an 11-5 record in one goal games. However they are 3-4 since the sweep of SLU and frankly, the Knights folded last weekend against Colgate and Cornell. Too many bad penalties late in games and lackadaisical play late in periods. If both teams are going to be shorthanded they seem to have picked a decent weekend to be so against an inconstant North Country duo.

Could be a fascinating weekend for us RPI fans. Actually could be a make or break weekend. This trip has never been an easy one for us-and this year will be made more difficult by being extremely short handed for Friday. On paper Clarkson looks like the tougher opponent but 50 years of following this trip has taught me that no game up there is ever easy for us.

First time for everything, Doc. Appleton has been a home away from home for opponents this year, I expect more of the same this weekend.

Will the games be available on line and if so how is the quality of the broadcasts?

I fully understand your saying this-but we have gone up there before, with what we thought were good teams, ready for a win and gotten blown off the map. My wife and I have made the trip up there many times(albeit not in the past 10 years)-and left bitterly disappointed too many times to count. We were fortunate to see one sweep up there but that was by the '85 team (in February of 85) and there were not many NCAA teams that could match that group-although SLU still beat them in Troy which no one else did.

I do have to admit, the season-wide sweep of Clarkson and SLU, and the 5-0 shutout at home of Clarkson (first time since 1954 IIRC) last season was quite nice.

Re: RPI & Union @ Clarkson & SLU (1/31, 2/1)

Well.........potential suspensions aside.......Appleton will offer little resistance and bountiful opportunities for you both to pad your stats. We flat out suck.

Along those lines, I just got off the phone with a third-year student at SLU who called seeking an annual donation. She said, and I'm quoting her, "I see that you've donated to the M's & W's Hockey Programs in the past, your support is much appreciated, and both teams are having great seasons." I politely corrected her and nearly vomited after hanging up the phone.

Re: RPI & Union @ Clarkson & SLU (1/31, 2/1)

Clarkson gets most lucky of the 2 north country teams with suspensions

After last week's lousy play, Clarkson will take any good luck it can get. Defense was lousy, really lousy, all weekend for Clarkson. Both goaltenders played well, but were left with no help many times. Tech was lucky to lose by one each night, easily could've given up 6 goals each game.
