RPI @ UNH, Saturday, Jan. 5th

Re: RPI @ UNH, Saturday, Jan. 5th

Although 5 to 1 is a significant difference, 5 has to be less than our average, so I wouldn't expect it to cause exhaustion for the team. Perhaps just relative to BU we were tired. One doesn't know how many of the players might be having mild flu symptoms.
I thought the refs were OK but I did think the boarding call on Dolan was undeserved and unfortunate. Dolan was going to hit him in the shoulder and the BU kid turned his back to him at the very last instant. That should be a no call. In an ideal world, the guy putting himself in danger should not be rewarded. Maybe we need an unsportsmanlike "idiocy" penalty and then they can call these as offsetting penalties (sort of like dangerous play in soccer?).

At any rate, I thought RPI had weathered the BU charge in the 3rd and were starting to reassert themselves when this penalty was called and gave BU the momentum again. It's a fast game and the ref saw a clear hit to the back I'm sure. I'll bet he didn't see the BU pirouette that made it happen though.

Re: RPI @ UNH, Saturday, Jan. 5th

We have got to find a way to protect a third period lead. Must admit though that we got little help from the refs. Only 1 penalty on BU all night and 5 on us (a couple in the third period) may have added a bit to the exhaustion some of our guys may have felt in the latter stages. Merriam played well. Holding BU at home to 2 goals in regulation shows that we are progressing. Hope we can give the same kind of effort tonight-we will need it.
Agree 100% Doc. Expect we'll see Diebold tonite...but I've been wrong all year:D

Men's lines tonight: Lee-Laliberte-Haggerty, Tinordi-McGowan-Burgdoerfer, Zalewski-Miller-Bubela, Fulton-Rogic-Commers.
D-pairings: Leonard-Bailen, Leboeuf-Bradley, Curadi-Dolan. Diebold gets the start tonight, flu must have eased.

Re: RPI @ UNH, Saturday, Jan. 5th

Having to kill a couple penalties in the third while BU was at full strength for the entire time may or may not have had some effect. i do suspect there is lots of virus around-not so much flu (but that is the easiest thing to call it). I wonder if our boys are asked to take flu shots before the season starts? Would seem to make sense to me. Unfortunately there is little one can do to prevent the plethora of other virus infections that arrive during the winter months. The flu this year, and I am not quite agreeing that is what any of our boys have, is particularly nasty. Having taken the shot in any previous year but not taking it this year, would afford you almost no protection. Many people shrug off the flu as just being some sort of mild infection-it is most assuredly not. I wonder how many would feel that way if they knew the number of flu related deaths reported each year? it is still one of the most contagious diseases known and we do not have much to treat it with.
Heard on national news tonite - ther is a flu outbreaks in 41 states (NY included). Its here earlier and its hitting hard, according to report.

When they use the word outbreak they really should be a bit more specific. The CDC releases stats that show there is some flu in 41 states-but that can be minimal in some, sporadic in some, or even widespread. As of jan 1st the number of states with widespread flu is very small. No doubt there are cases appearing all over the place-usually spreading from south to north as the season progresses. up to now this has been an average number of cases-but the cases presenting are fairly severe. The flu shot has not provided the amount of immunity usually seen and no one is quite sure why yet. The strains included in the shot are all of those expected including a new strain of Swine Flu. It appears to me (and of course i am no expert on this) that some strains have undergone some mutative process and have found a way to avoid being susceptible to the immunization. These bugs are often smarter than we are. One very scary note-if we ever do see some massive mutation in a strain that is both virulent and very contagious-we could be looking at a world wide nightmare like they saw in 1918. With all of our modern advances we are much beter at preventing this disease than we are at treating it. In any case if Diebold plays tonight-then he must have had the flu for a long time and recovered.

I have the feeling coach SA would be playing a different line up if this was an ECAC league game. He is giving some guys ice time who would be sitting and resting some others who might be playing. Not a bad thing to do knowing we really need everyone healthy starting next friday for the push for the playoffs. Should be fun. Go Red!!

Re: RPI @ UNH, Saturday, Jan. 5th

Someone remind me-UNH plays on what size ice surface? Are we on a larger sheet tonight or is this HFH size?

Re: RPI @ UNH, Saturday, Jan. 5th

UNH is Olympic. Bubela with a hat trick. :p:D
Thanks Dude-I used to fear our team playing on the bigger surface but with SA recruiting players who can move well out there-I actually think we can do well on the wider surface.
