Sunday’s game(s)

Kyrkostas not much expected
Sanborn not much expected

I will post the summary(ies) whenever. : eek :

On Saturday, The Hill School defeated the NJ Rockets 4-3 in overtime. (Not them team which Al-Azem plays for, but an age-group team in the same organization.) Nothing mentioned about Ryan Sanborn in tweets.

Nothing has been posted yet about Kimball Union's (Kyrkostas) game on Sunday vs. Stanstead College.

Edit: They lost 5-3. Nothing else yet.

The years the recruits are listed as arriving at RPI are not necessarily accurate.
The dates on which some of the women are listed as committing on may be considerably after the actual dates.
I am assuming that Neutral Zone regards their Star ratings as public because they often tweet them with committals.

STRENGTHS according to Neutral Zone (NZ doesn't include them for women):
Aw=Awareness/IQ, Ch=Character/Leadership, GS=Goal Scoring Ability, Sk=Skating, Sp=Speed, SH=Stick Handling Skill,
St-Strength, To=Toughness, Vi=Vision/Passing

I agree that Appert had better recruits, but IMO the quality of his recruits went down during his tenure.

Smith has had a couple of recruits who were drafted but they decommitted and went elsewhere. I suspect that if we improve, we will be able to keep such players. Most of the league went downhill when 8 of the teams did not play two years ago. (IMO except QU, Harvard, and SLU which was at a low at that time)

I can't help but torture myself by occasionally glancing over at what Benny Barr is lining up for players....as he was the runner up for the RPI job. Included in his current stack of UMaine recruits is the goalie from Latvia who played WJCs, the two Nadeau brothers playing for the Vees who are # 1 and #2 BCHL scoring, and d-man Hopkins who is the #1 scoring defenseman in the league....we can dream at least !! Ha ha....

Ben Barr should be the head coach at RPI. No offense to Dave smith but it’s absurd Ben didn’t get the job. He’s one of the best recruiters in the country. His resume speaks for itself. Paid his dues and proved he’s a elite coach and recruiter. No head coaching experience I guess was the reason. Pretty stupid but look who was doing the hiring. Let’s see hire the alumni/former player who’s been mentored by the best coaches in college hockey who also recruited a national championship team (umass)or hire the guy who had 4 winning seasons out of 12 seasons in Atlantic hockey. Hmmm tough choice. Let’s hire a search firm for 300k to make the wrong choice.

Let's be real here. Ben Barr is not recruiting those players to come to RPI while Shirley is the president. It's just not happening with the terrible resources and zero support.

I do agree he'd be recruiting better than we are currently right now, but winning games is what matters most, and he has not done that yet as a head coach. I think it's too early to think the grass is greener on the other side. Wait a couple years to see if Barr turns those players into wins at Maine and then revisit

Neutral Zone posted the following as part of a public post:

Carter Oakenfold (F, L, 6’0″, 148, Spruce Grove Saints, 04/30/2005) to RPI

Oakenfold (★★★ 1/4) is in his first season with the Spruce Grove Saints in the AJHL. In 20 games he has seven points (2g, 5a). He did appear in three games for the Okotoks Oilers last season but this is his first full season in the AJHL.

Prior to the AJHL Oakenfold played several seasons for the Edge School on the U15, U17, U16, and U18 teams.

In an AJHL preseason report, our scouts noted that it’s possible he hit a recent growth spurt.

NZ Scouts: “Oakenfold is a crafty playmaker with quick, nimble hands. He has a quick first step and strong, powerful edges which give him the balance to stay on the puck and maneuver in traffic. He’s poised, he’s smart with the puck, he can stretch the ice with his vision and passing ability and outworks opponents all over the ice.”

He definitely had a growth spurt.

Completely agree...and I do think they were afraid to hire another 1st time HC. Benny inherited a roster that was more barren in a tougher league than what Smith had upon arrival, piecng together a band of transfers for this year's team .....and also why he's got somewhere around 20 kids incoming for fall '23.

Sez is right, he'll have to prove that he can apply the lessons he's learned as an AC, but knowing what kind of guy Benny is I am confident he will.
