RPI Recruit Thread 2019-20

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2019-20

Jeff Cox evaluation from 2017. I assume that he has improved from being a D-III prospect since he is leading the OJHL in goals.

Jake Gagnon
#14 Yale 18U, Forward, 11/4/99, Shoots Right

The Pointe-Claire, Quebec native will be in his second season of prep hockey this winter at Milbrook. He stood out at the ECC Labor Day Cup for his passing and play-making abilities. He’s likely a Division III prospect, but he’s a player coaches at that level should be eyeing.

Great to see a kid with some offensive skills. Hopefully we are getting a late bloomer who is at a really good stage in his skill development curve.

I suspect that he is penned in to replace Polino or Marrello, if Smith does that sort of thing. He does seem to be improving as Mahshie did last year, but he won't be the answer to our prayers. He can be a committee man in "scoring by committee". :)

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2019-20

On the forward side,, we are losing five seniors assuming that Burgess is not returning. McIsaac and Gagnon must come next fall because they are 99's. I am virtually sure Beaton is coming if we don't lose him and quite sure about Brackett. I also hope that Brown is coming if there is any chance that someone will take him from us (which there is ;) ). I think that the commitment of Gagnon lessens the chance that Fawkes will show up in the fall, although he still could come if a current forward leaves or Smith wants to increase the roster even more, which I hope that he does not.

Nothing has changed today about goalies. Miller must come, which means we will have four goalies if no one leaves. Nothing has changed on D. We have three graduating. Sertti must come. Davies will probably come. We will either have one fewer or someone else will commit. Conceivably, Helsen's injury was known all along, and he has been considered as a 2020 arrival.

Ever since Fawkes started struggling in the NAHL, I assumed he was not going to come in next fall. His move back down to the MJHL confirmed that to me as does this commitment. I also think this commitment indicates that the coaching staff does not find it likely that Burgess returns, whether he goes pro or grad transfers. I would guess Brown is coming too, but that remains to be seen.

Interesting that he's described as a fire hydrant, front of the net PP type guy here yet he leads the OJHL in scoring... in any event, he sounds like a very solid two way player...for our "committee" :D

....actually, he’s 2nd in scoring WS but he does lead in Goals. I like the description of a fire hydrant in the Bumper position on the PP. As a smaller player in that position I think of Brayden Point of Tampa. Now, if only...........:)

Goals are all that count. :D (Just kidding.)

I was trying to understand that abbreviated write up, because when I think of the bumper I think of the high slot (Point, Bergeron, etc.) while I think of the fire hydrant role as being anchored in the low slot and embodied by one of the top players to play it, Tim Kerr. Every time we bring in a pretty big guy (e.g. Jaren Burke, Ryan Mahshie) I hope they can fill that latter function. Unfortunately, that really hasn't been the strength of any of our recent recruits and the game has tended away from the "park someone at the top of the crease" approach. If Gagnon can do either job (and I'd agree at his size the high slot position makes more sense) more power to him.

Speaking of Tim Kerr, I think back to the one and only time I went to a hockey game at MSG. I've been there for multiple college hoops games and those crowds were loudly into the game, but nothing compared to the people up in the balcony for hockey. I was in town for business and bought a ticket in the front row from a scalper for a Flyers- Rangers game. Every time there was a face-off with Kerr on the ice the leather-lunged "gentleman" sitting next to me would stand up and announce in a booming voice that could reach the entire arena that Kerr engaged in intimate relations with his own mother. The usher, standing less than 10 feet away in the tunnel never moved. I had no rooting interest in either team, but I can only imagine what would have happened if someone in a Flyers jersey (another team well known for the dignity of its fans) was nearby.

Keep hoping that Finn Brown stays our recruit. Having read reports on him at neutral Zone (which I can't post), he could fill that role admirably.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2019-20

On Friday, the Wellington Dukes defeated the Trenton Golden Hawks 2-1. Jake Gagnon had a roughing, a boarding (with 10 minute misconduct), and a second roughing penalty. The boarding and 2nd roughing penalties were both at the end of the 2nd period. http://ojhl_stats.wttstats.pointstreak.com/boxscore.html?gameid=3465443

Gagnon's line is 36-27-25-52-26.

It figures, he commits and he isn’t a scorer anymore. 10 minutes in penalties before today and 16 minutes today.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2019-20

On Friday, the Maryland Black Bears defeated the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights 3-0. Reid Leibold had an assist. 5 SOGs. http://nahl.com/game-center/#/game-summary/26029

Leibold's line is 31-3-5-8-6.

RL's scoring has picked up since early November. Only one assist before that. Hopefully, it will continue to improve.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2019-20

I will post the other summaries in the morning. Itagaki and Fawkes are not dressed. The others are. I will check everything.
