Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2018-19

Article about Chicago's win https://www.chicagosteelhockeyteam.com/news_article/show/974270. It includes a video interview with Fontaine. Sarlo is also mentioned in the article.

Gunnarwolfe Fontaine scored his first two USHL goals for Chicago

Fontaine, playing in his 20th USHL game, found the back of the net shorthanded with 4:39 to play in the period. Fontaine sent a one-time slap shot home after center Jake Schmaltz collected the puck in the defensive zone and found Fontaine on the two-on-one for his first career USHL marker.

Fontaine tied things up for a second time, this time at even strength, just 53 seconds into the third period. After defenseman John Spetz’s shot was saved, Fontaine circled in the slot and slipped a shot past a sliding Kobryn.

With 1:41 to play, the RoughRiders opted not to pull Kobryn for the extra attacker with an offensive zone faceoff After the puck made its way into the Cedar Rapids zone, Steel left wing Christian Sarlo pinned the puck to the end boards and killed off nearly 20 seconds. The RoughRiders pulled Kobryn with about 40 seconds remaining but couldn’t set up as the Steel did a great job of clearing their own zone.

I certainly wish the young man well and it's possible that he's one of the goal scorers we're missing, but he signed with Mercyhurst, not Michigan. it doesn't appear the high-end programs were beating down his door after he decommitted.

Hunter McDonald is indeed playing for his HS besides for the Rochester Coalition 16U team/

For example
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">&#55357;&#57000;The boys come out with a big win over the Barons 11-1&#55357;&#57000; Big game from Nick Jasie with 3 goals and Hunter McDonald with 2&#55358;&#56645;&#55356;&#57298;&#55357;&#56629;&#55357;&#56628;</p>— Fairport Hockey (@FPThockey) <a href="https://twitter.com/FPThockey/status/1070158433515642880?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">December 5, 2018</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

The team website linked on the Twitter page does not include stats or box scores just scores. http://fairporthockey.org/Results.asp?org=FAIRPORTHOCKEY.ORG

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2018-19

I certainly wish the young man well and it's possible that he's one of the goal scorers we're missing, but he signed with Mercyhurst, not Michigan. it doesn't appear the high-end programs were beating down his door after he decommitted.

Perhaps it pays to point out that the top programs often have so many recruits listed for so many years in advance that adding a last minute player is less likely. Jenny and i had seen Jon play when he was young and he seems to have quite a decent upside. Hope this is one that does not come back to bite us Not sure when and if we have Mercyhurst on the schedule again.

True, but many teams, even some highly-ranked, add players over the course of the season for the next year. A quick scan of Heisenberg shows teams in all leagues have added 98s, 99s or 00s in recent months that appear to be for next year. That includes virtually every team in our league. You never know the positional needs of specific teams, their financial/scholarship situations versus the player’s needs, etc. but openings do exist. In this case we have a 99 playing Tier II that seems to have had a disagreement with the coaching staff on the best development path. He made his choice and the staff apparently made theirs. Time to wish him well and move on.

I will post the summaries whenever.

Beaton’s Kemptville game is just posted so that I remember to update their schedule in my file.
I also assume that Brackett and Miller are still in the USHL until after the WJAC and Sarlo will stay with Chicago at least for the time being.

Absolutely true. You just have to wonder though when you have a kid in your system, fairly highly touted, for so many years and then he is suddenly told there is no spot for him. Not unprecedented especially with a new coach running the show but still not something we have seen here in Troy much. We have had a few decommit on their own (some are those we do not name!) but usually not involuntarily and certainly not after 4-5 years. But as you say, we move on (and I hope upward) as this is a weekend on the road for us where we must show improvement and just cannot be overwhelmed

He was not the only one who was on our list for a long time and won't show up. He was, however, the longest unless Babichuk also doesn't show up.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2018-19

One more thing is the question of cost. It would not surprise me if Bendorf was to get a full scholarship, and Smith figures he can get two players almost as good, each for a partial. I think that Smith is trying to spread the wealth around more than SA did. E.g., no more walk-on third string goalie.

I think that we should close the book on JB until he scores a hat trick against us.

I was envisioning something similar. Mercyhurst hasn’t exactly been a frequent opponent on the men’s side (more common for the women I believe), but if Emil Ohrvall were to end up joining Bendorf in Erie, we should probably not schedule them for a few years.
