I am assuming that Neutral Zone records their Star ratings as public because they tweet them with committals.

Rory Herrman, #15 Top Shelf Hockey/New Hampton, ’99 – A true power forward in every sense of the term. Drives to the net with a purpose and looks to finish his checks along the boards. Has a heavy shot which he used to score a nice goal in a tight area. His feet still need some work, but with a work ethic like his, they will likely get better in the near future.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2018-19

Would love to start seeing 6’1-3” Forwards but take a look at CH’s list of commits for ECAC players. Discard the goalies & Dmen & see how many are over 6’. RPI is not alone. Even Cornell! BTW, when I see a player listed at 6’ I tend to believe he’s actually 5’11” but even the number of 6 footers is few. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...qQ9K11zAUm49gtzBmwMdJlLCs/edit#gid=1466169803

I agree that we are not alone with getting relatively small forwards, but his USHL page https://www.ushl.com/view#/player/7676/62/robert-herrman states "Height and weight confirmed by NHL Central Scouting (10/1/17)", so 6'0" is as accurate as we will ever get. I realize that your comment wasn't directed specifically against Herrman's listed height.

I'm not so concerned about size as speed. Many of our recruits (Bendorf, Sarlo, Herrman, etc.) seem to have drawn similar comments - something along the lines of "has the makings of a solid 2-way player if he can improve his skating." While acknowledge that can be said of a lot of teenage hockey players that go on to successful careers, and I'm not necessarily looking for Butryn/Hernberg type speed and mobility, I'd at least like my smaller to mid-sized forwards to have D-I wheels. Hopefully these guys will add that missing ingredient before arriving in Troy.

Agree in many ways but I seem to post the following every year before the season starts - "You cannot teach size" Size alone is rarely if ever enough. But as all RPI graduates remember, Newton's Third Law still holds true. In a collision that is unavoidable, i would rather be in a Lincoln Navigator that a Toyota Prius. There is however the possibility that a boy can play bigger than his listed size (and numerous examples that we all have seen of boys who just do not play up to their given size).

I like size too. Hockey has evolved away from the immovable object approach, but I still ponder trying Jaren Burke in a Tim Kerr/Phil Esposito screen and pick up garbage goals role on the PP. As for the overall size of the members of our roster, in the absence of mass, velocity and leverage can still be a formula for creating (or avoiding) and winning physical battles.

Didn't we try that during Curadi's senior year? I don't recall it working out all that well.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2018-19

I noticed on a link in a post by turk on the last thread that Herrman won a community service award. Bendorf won his team and league award for service also. At least we will have competition for something in the future. :D

Let’s hope Leo Durocher was wrong.

Didn't work out well at all.

That’s because size alone isn’t enough. It looked simple for Kerr and Esposito, but the hand/eye coordination required to tip a high-speed shot or pick up a loose puck in a tangle of legs is quite extraordinary. Add to that a defenseman, who has spent his entire life clearing the area above the crease, not occupying it, and it was a long shot for Luke to make it work. Top it off with a team and scheme that struggled to get pucks on net and it was probably doomed to failure.

Would it work with Burke or any other big guy we could find? Probably not (as I said, the game has changed and Esposito/Kerr were unique talents even if they weren’t particularly great athletes) but when I remember the teams of my youth picking up lots of “cheap”, defense demoralizing goals, I understand why a desperate Seth gave it a shot.
