Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2014-15

From the HF Boards in regards to the WHL Bantam Draft........You look at a kid (just an example) like Cory Babichuk from CAC... no one is going to give him a second look in the first few rounds because he is 5'4 115... however his pedigree is something else... was among the best in AA last year best defenseman for CAC in 2012... then he steps up to AAA and doesn't miss a beat... cracked North team at Alberta Cup too so that tells you he is an all-province talent... love his puck management skills and his containment game is of a player much bigger and older... third on that team in points to give you some idea of his offensive skills... he had the Benson assignment in the playoffs and did o.k. with it

We'll see if he grows or remains a squirt... but as you say these kids are so young that it is certainly possible... make this player 5'11 and he is a premier player at the next level... an easy top four defender on a WHL team... maybe even better than that

That does sound good, but now that he is 16, he should start growing if he will. I wonder how tall his parents are.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2014-15

As far as I can tell the site which I linked only has the leading scorers, not the scorers by team. However one can order the stats by any column. So I was able to get http://www.amhl.ab.ca/leaderboard_skater.php?season_id=3&orderby=PP. That shows
22 D Babichuk, Cory CAC Gregg Distributors 12 3 4 7 0 0 2 0 0 22

There doesn't seem to be a link available but by going to last year's stats and changing the season_id from 2 to 3, I get the following http://www.amhl.ab.ca/team.php?id=133&season_id=3. :)

Edit: Does anyone have an idea what the CFB column means?

I just rechecked the Hockey Alberta rules on suspensions for Checking From Behind: 1) where a 5 minute penalty and game misconduct is assessed there is a one game suspension; 2) where a match penalty is assessed there is a four game suspension.

Now it doesn't make complete sense. He has 22 minutes in total. 5 minor penalties is 10. the game misconduct is another ten which only leaves 2 for the CFB, and he hasn't missed any games and the most recent game sheet only has a minor penalty. http://www.amhl.ab.ca/scoresheet.php?sched_id=739&season_id=3

I guess that I will now look at all 12 game sheets.

Here's the score sheet http://www.amhl.ab.ca/scoresheet.php?sched_id=643&season_id=3. The CFB is a minor penalty and has the game misconduct with it. He didn't miss any games. It was the first game of the season. It still must be checking from behind. I guess that we should be happy that a 5'5" player does at least attempt to play defense. ;)

Back in the 80s Clarkson had a defenseman named Fretz that they listed at 5'7", but he seemed shorter than that. He was an excellent skater and was predominantly an offensive defenseman. However, he was stronger than you'd think so he wasn't the big liability you'd expect for such a short guy on the back line.

What does this have to do with Babichuk? Really nothing except comparable size. But if he turns out to be anything close to a comparable player (Fretz was an All-American) we'll be very happy. Based on the pictures, however, he'll have to get a lot stronger regardless of his final height.
