RPI Recruit Thread 2013-14 (Part III)

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2013-14 (Part III)

Of the 45 players previously protected by the Stars that I highlighted in this blog article, all but six are here at camp. Those six missing are: (D) Austin Cho, (F) Michael Floodstrand, (F) Jacob Harris, (D) Michael Prapavessis, (D) Liam Schioler, and (F) Kyle Weller. Floodstrand will play for Team USA U-18 next season, while Prapavessis will be attending RPI.....http://www.lincolnstarsblog.com/
It's too bad that Cho isn't going to Lincoln next year since he would be a lot easier for me to track. OTOH, I can't fault someone at all for wanting to graduate HS with his class.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2013-14 (Part III)

With the recent announcement of recruits for this season, I just want to take a second and thank Ralph and turk181 for all the hard work they put into this thread. It has given me much reading material and useful information to share with my college hockey loving friends.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2013-14 (Part III)

There are a number of changes from their teams from last year's websites. They also gave DM two extra assists. :)

Speaking of assists-i really wish they would list them as either primary or secondary assists. It helps me a bit to know if the goal scored was a direct result of an assist/pass or whether the assist was granted and the player involved was 100 feet from the play. Perhaps belongs on our regular thread-but it pertains to recruits in that it really helps me to know how involved a recruit is in the scoring far better. For example-If DM has 50 assists and 40 of them are primary-I would have a far greater appreciation for his ability to set up goal scoring for us in the future. Just one of my rambling musings.

I agree but it probably averages out.

I can guarantee that it does not. #G>#PA>#SA! I'm surprised that Ralph of all people wouldn't have realized that. And beyond that, the secondary assist can sometimes be the pass that really made the play. Goals on rebounds can be good examples of this - beautiful pass, shot, great save and in comes a 3rd player to pick up the trash.

Then normalize each by the corresponding total number by the team. :)

I agree that sometimes secondary assists are very important. Hockey is full of stats that are not all that meaningful GWGs for example. Sometimes they are very meaningful, but sometimes they are not. The total number of GWGs by a player has some meaning after a long time period.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2013-14 (Part III)

I will leave it to Dr D. :D

Ralph: Really wish you would not do that. Numbers and formulae have just not been my thing for a long time. I do however know what the S&P and Dow numbers are.;) Glad though that you and JM respoonded with some interesting thoughts on the subject. I just always felt goals were a simple stat-you put it into the net and you get the point. Assists just come in some many different varieties that they are often hard to quantify. I have had this conversation with a few professionals who scout young hockey players and find most of them have their own rating systems looking for quality shifts on the ice and discount some of the things that many of us look at so frequently. BTW, the ones i have spoken with think we have a rather nice combination of recruits coming to Troy.

Their systems are probably much more useful than the current stats.

Having attended games with some I can tell you that they watch a game totally differently than I ever have. Often they are totally disonterested in the things i see and focus on things that i do not even notice much less understand.

I tend to agree Doc. And for the record, we have have a 6'3 195lb freshman forward headed our way ...I expect a HECKUVA lot more excitement and positivity out if you! ;))

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2013-14 (Part III)

Having attended games with some I can tell you that they watch a game totally differently than I ever have. Often they are totally disonterested in the things i see and focus on things that i do not even notice much less understand.

Amen to this. I remember at Youngstown/Dubuque wondering why they picked Chris Bradley, and didn't quite understand. So I told myself, never mind the plays that get crowds reeling, and instead take a look at the players and what they're doing the rest of the time, and that's one of the reasons I knew Jake Wood would be successful, because his off the puck play is terrific. It's also the reason why I thought RB would have some room for improvement. Didn't get a chance to watch any of the incoming frosh play this year, maybe next time.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2013-14 (Part III)

I haven't seen him play. But the comments I've read mentioned "excellent speed for his size", "ability to find open ice", and "skating ability". Being a product of Sweden, my WAG is yes ,he can skate.

Since he is indeed Sewdish-I would just like to meet his sisters.;)(Please do not let Jenny see this post)

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2013-14 (Part III)

I tend to agree Doc. And for the record, we have have a 6'3 195lb freshman forward headed our way ...I expect a HECKUVA lot more excitement and positivity out if you! ;))

The excitement and positivity from me will return-I can promise that. It is just going to take a little time. 2014 has just been deifficult for us so far. Even though i have hnot been able to bring myself to post much since February, I have a very good feeling about this group of recruits and some very interesting observations from those who know far more than I could ever learn. We will most definitely have size and speed. My only concern is how all of this will get integrated. So much will depend on the meshing together of the talent we are getting and what we already have.
