RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13 (Part III)

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13 (Part III)

Small sample size, but I have seen DE play at least a dozen times the past two seasons. Although HS play doesn't always transfer to the college game he is very gifted with the puck, and plays very smart positional hockey defensively. Obviously will never be a bruiser, yet his probable lack of NHL potential shouldn't deter him at RPI.
Lack of NHL potential is a plus since it won't result in a Pirri-D'Amigo situation again.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13 (Part III)

look at Ferris State D-core two years ago. I think everyone was under 6'. But they all could skate. System wise, they all played a very tight gap in the nuetral zone, challenging every pass. They were able to do this because there was alway a back checking forward coming back through the middle. They were able to plug up the neutral zone, forcing turn over and then, quickly transitioning to offense of the turnover they forced. Teams would then result to dump and chase, then just lost the race to the loose puck to those speedy, small defensemen, who once again, were transitioning to offense from thier.

Point I'm trying to make, systems are key here, were some will support your team personal strengths.

Also, with the way the college game is now being called, the big/harding hitting defensemen can be a real liability with the head contact, etc point of emphasis, on top of the NZ crackdown on inference.
However in the ECAC many teams still play a relatively slow, big man's game, although this is changing.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13 (Part III)

Times certainly do change though. When I was playing a bit as a young man-5'9" and 180 was either a big bruising power forward or a very decent sized defenseman. As most here know-I am one of those who strongly believes you cannot teach size. But at teh college level in particular-talent and speed can make up for much of that and be an even more important asset. As long as the entire defensive corps is not of similar size, we should be able to defend against the bigger forwards of the Division I teams without any problem.
I was thinking the same thing. Prapavessis is 6'1" which should partially compensate for Manley and Moore.

Hopefully. There is no question that talent and speed are important. But matching up against other teams is just so important and if you do not have the size on defense to handle the strength of those 6'2" 230 lb forwards who cruise into the crease or camp out just in front of it-I do not care how skilled you are-moving a big body out of the way or riding him to the boards takes size and strength. If I am recruiting a 6 man defense for ECAC college hockey as it is played now-i want 3 or 4 Luke's along with those smaller quick defensemen. IMO you just have to have the speed and skill to compete withose quick small forwards on some teams but if you do not have the size to deal with the bigger boys on others, you will just be pushed all over the place.

I think that the ECAC is changing and Yale's victory accelerated the change. Be that as it may, one still needs big defensemen.

I wish that I had been paying attention to Moore in the MN State tourney.

Yale was a good team all year-that got on a roll where they played so well together that they became a very good team. They matched up well against just about anyone except a certain team from Troy who smoked them twice. I agree totally-and i would not want to go up against a team with size unless we were able to match up with them somewhat.

Unless they are true pylons. :)

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13 (Part III)

I just compiled a list of our verbally committed recruits and when their USHL team is having its tryout camp. (I hope that I got them all correct.) This will enable us to see who is actually interested in playing in the USHL next season, and to see how they do in scrimmages assuming that results are posted.

Code:
Fornaris Cedar Rapids 5/30-6/02
Manley Waterloo 6/01-6/03
Moore Sioux City 6/19-6/23
Prapavessis Lincoln 6/06-6/09
Tironese Green Bay 6/16-6/20

I debated several days over whether to post this, but why not. :)

The real reason Meirs Moore picked RPI over UMD. :D

This has fallen off the front page again. (Yes, I didn't add Lester Averman. :) )
