Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13 (Part II)

I'm not at all worried about his size. Plenty of examples of kids his size and smaller who are excelling in the ECAC -- JL, Calof, Jones brothers, Spink brothers, etc.

It's not the height part that concerns me as much as his build. Aren't most of the others whom you mentioned stocky? That would also pertain to Tironese.

You know, I just noticed... How does someone have 10 points after getting 7 goals and 4 assists? ;) (Hint: the player I saw last week that played on the visiting team)

I have had the opportunity to see him without the pads. His height is no problem-he is just realtively thin. But then again so was Brad Tapper when he came in as a freshman. And he did just fine in his 3 years and was one of our boys to get to play in the big time for a spell.;)

Good point that Tapper has a similar build. The differences are that Tapper was taller and played a physical game which Melanson doesn't.

Tapper had a lot of things including just fearlessly getting near the crease and willingness to take a hit to get into position to score. Although listed at 180+ for most of his time at RPI, I can attest that was a high estimate. He did of course possess that Tapper temper-something you just can't teach, and was never afraid to spend some time in the box for some nastiness. Melanson does not display any of that. But he is much more unselfish on the ice and will pass up ashot (perhaps a bit too often) to set up a teammate for a better chance. Only time will tell how he fits into the SA scheme of things.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13 (Part II)

Bourbonnais and Melanson are playing today. After 2 periods Bourbonnais has a minor penalty for slashing. I'll post the summaries in the AM.

Nope. None of those kids are stocky. Calof is smaller than JL. In fact , Melanson is as tall or taller than all of em

I never talked about height, just size which to me is a combination of height and "width". I agree with DrD that Brad Tapper is a good comparison except that Tapper is a couple of inches taller.

Melanson 5'10" 160 lb http://ushl2011.stats.pointstreak.com/playerpage.html?playerid=6380585&seasonid=9358
Calof 5'10" 175 lb http://collegehockeystats.net/1213/rosters/prnm
JL 5'7" 175 lb http://collegehockeystats.net/1213/rosters/renm
Jones (both same) 5'9" 165 lb http://collegehockeystats.net/1213/rosters/quim
Spink (both same) 5'10" 185lb http://collegehockeystats.net/1213/rosters/clgm

I will be the first one to admit that published stats are not accurate, and certainly none of these are close to Curadi in build, but this agrees with my impression when looking at all of them -- Melanson appears to be the thinnest. He could still certainly bulk up significantly as he is younger than the rest. I also add that the only one whom I have actually seen live is JL, so I am using video evidence, while you have seen more if not all of them live.

I also agree that speed could minimize the effect of Melanson being relatively thin, but I wouldn't compare him to Gaudreau yet.

You can obsess all you like my good man ( I do often here:p). Bottom line is Melanson will be as big or bigger than ALL of those guys were are/as freshmen. He is already bigger than the Jones brothers AND JL, AND yes, Calof (there is NO way that kid is 175..I've seen him several times). And for the record, Calof had 31 pts. as a frosh at P'ton. From what Doc has said, Melanson is every bit as fast as Gaudreau, and that does indeed minimize the size issue. "Separation" I believe is what the scouts call it. :D

EDIT: For the record NHL CSB has him at 5'10.5 154 - so he's grown taller, but thinner...OMG time to worry Ralph !!!!!! :D:p:eek: Yup - I've seen them all - including Jones bros (excellent 2 way forwards) vs. UNO last weekend. But I prefer to see them lambasted by the BRO at the side of the net...:D

I should have used the NHL CSB numbers -- it's probably the most accurate. BTW, who is obsessing? :p

Wicked-Those numbers seem very accurate to me. I am just a fraction under 6' and Melanson was almost my height last year. I alwys felt his weight was over estimated and I had him at about 160 max. But as far as speed-he is an effortless skater who does not seem to be moving until you just see him pull away from everyone. If speed and quckness translate into something-then he will be wonderful. If size means more-then he has some work to do. He just seems to have the type of frame that does not bulk up-medically would probably used the term ectomorphic. But what I do not have a clue about is strength. Hard to judge how well he can stay on his skates and push back when i saw him playing against high school kids who were his size or smaller at times. it will all come together in a year or two and we will see if the scouts have the right idea about him.

Well put. He should perform well against teams like Yale, as do most of his future teammates, but if the Big Red Pylons ever catch him, he is in trouble. ;) I really wish that more of the ECAC teams would stop playing like Cornell does.
