RPI Offseason Thread: Six Languages of Drivel

Re: RPI Offseason Thread: Six Languages of Drivel

The three greatest coaches I've ever seen in any sport all taught sound fundamental principles of play, yet when you watch their teams over the years, the teams always played to the players' strengths, yet the success was never about a great individual carrying the team, it was always about how well the players meshed together and executed collectively when it mattered.

To me there is a huge difference between "sound fundamentals" / "basic principles" and a "system." The former are fluid, the latter sounds rigid.

When you are on offense you probe for the other team's weakness in a systematic way; when you are in defense you stop the other team's highest percentage attempts and force them into low-percentage attempts. The actual technical details vary but the concepts never do.

Why is it that you make so much sense? And do it so succinctly?

To be fair, when compared to Flagdude, everyone makes sense. :D

Edit: I realize DrD was talking about the other fish, but the above still applies. :)

He’ld be my choice also but I’m not so sure he’ll be wearing either.

Given we have nine D coming in, something tells me there will be a number of XD games, and the end of year goal horn video is going to be fairly short.

I suspect that 11 forwards and 7 defenseman will be the norm. Hopefully it also means no 5-forward powerplays.

...with the subsequent unit using two.

Hopefully Bokenfohr continues his high level of play from last year. I knew he'd be special after the limited time I saw from him the year before.

Here's a thought, though... could any of the D-men be a good utility skater, similar to a Vassel or Brutlag? Perhaps something in one of the freshman? Because other than Parker Reno, I can't really see it from the others.

I think that Bell has played forward.

Re: RPI Offseason Thread: Six Languages of Drivel

Did anything appear in The Record recently about RPI's incoming players? I was just wondering if anything appeared in addition to info from the press release.

....I just thought that was your guess but I see those are the picks..... http://www.rpiathletics.com/news/2014/6/18/MHOCK_0618141319.aspx?path=hockey

Sorry about that. I meant to post the link but got distracted by a business call.

In any case, it's a solid set of guys but time will tell how they are as designated leaders. The thing that most worried me going into last year was replacing the leadership of CJ Lee. Followed so early in the season by the loss of the #1 goaltender, it seemed the team was unable to develop the same confidence and drive. Half of that problem should be solved. Let's see if Leonard et al can address the other half.
