RPI Offseason Thread: 7 Months of Drivel

Re: RPI Offseason Thread: 7 Months of Drivel

I think that Appert brought the team back from the depths, but he has certainly not gotten the best out of the talent that he has brought in.
Appert inherited a weakly performing program and after 8 seasons is presiding over a weakly performing program. I get the desire to stick with the guy; he's nice, he's well-spoken, he appears to be giving it his all. Also, even for those that don't like him, his lengthy contract makes it tough to do much other than stick with him. Maybe he'll turn things around but I think it's way too premature to suggest he's somehow saved the program.

The 2nd place finish that he got Kazzie's first year was the highest we finished in the league in 20 years. Just sayin.

I never said that he saved the program, but he has brought in better talent, and in my opinion made the program better.
I wish he were a better on ice coach. :(

He also, imho, seems still to be learning and growing. Some coaches have their "shtick" and stick with it, so to speak; others continue to evolve over time. Sometimes a group of players jells into a unit that is a true "team" and sometimes a group of players remains a group of players. We saw the former in '12-'13 and the latter in '13-'14.

Followed-up immediately by an all too frequent playoff series loss. Also, as for RS performance, the team has finished 9th or lower in 4 of the last 8 seasons and the 2nd place you cite is the only top 4 finish in the last 8 years. But I get it, you love the guy. No harm in that.

Re: RPI Offseason Thread: 7 Months of Drivel

But I get it you hate the guy.

The guy sucks as a bench coach. At the end of the day, what drives tickets sales? Dubyas. Especially those in playoff time, which in historical significance, is the ONLY thing that matters.

Completely agree. My view from a guy who's been attending since the early 80s:

No one (including Seth ) is happy with the way the last few years have ended up. No debate there.

But by any objective standard, the profile of the program has risen - aided by strong recruiting By the coaches and an HC who knows how a top caliber program operates ...rink improvements, fundraising, alumni road gatherings , outreach to fans and community, engaging local businesses in investing in the program, etc.

Whether Seth can put the final , on ice piece if the puzzle together remains to be seen. But on whole, the program is far ahead of where it was when SA got here, IMO.

Back off of me.

Really? What am I missing?

Was the ECAC title in 1995 a dream? Another appearance in the final in 2000? 3-4 more appearances in the ECAC final 4 sprinkled in around since. ...until the recent coaching change, and they haven't been to the semifinal round.

I'm not going to sit here and advocate Fridgen was worth keeping, but you can't sit here and say the results on the ice has improved or stayed status quo. The data can be spun 9 ways to Sunday, it's just not there. Simple as that.

WS, I've enjoyed your insight here for years, but I think you have it wrong here. Almost all of things you have listed (fundraising, alumni road gatherings , outreach to fans and community, engaging local businesses in investing in the program) happen for almost free when the team wins. You were around for the good ol' days -- After the 84 and 85 seasons, fans, sponsors, alumni, we're tripping over themselves to get on the bandwagon. And stayed that way until Fridgen came... however, I as a fan first, and alumnae second, could care less about all of that if the team doesn't perform, with the exception of them being model citizens and students, in that order. RPI has completely fallen off the college hockey map as being a credible program - not where it was even 10 years ago. Yes talent arrives each year....and departs before the assembled team can achieve anything meaningful. Isn't it a red flag when huge talents like Jerry D'Amigo and Brandon Pirri short-circuit their development and consider the AHL a better proving ground instead of playing at RPI? Same question for Mike Zalewski, who undoubtedly needs a LOT more development than BRandon or JDA ever did. Pirri plays regularly, for the doormat of the NHL, and D'Amigo is a role player/4th liner for another sad sack franchise. Their talent is way beyond what they've become, yet couldn't wait at least 2 years?

Anyways, long story short, I think all of your metrics are subjective and second priority. The priority metric in the ECAC is goals, wins, and championships; not "nice-tries" and "3.8 GPA's". The results don't bear success, and after 2 complete recruiting cycles, progress on the ice is minimal, if any at all.

Re: RPI Offseason Thread: 7 Months of Drivel

Today is 2 May 2014. There are 155 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 4 October 2014 for the start of next season.

He was referring to the regular season. We finished #6 in 1995.

You don't get banners for how you finish in the regular season. Or is the administration going to put up another feel-good banner, like that dumb tournament participation one?

You have made a lot of good points here, and I can agree with some and disagree with others.
But I think that your priorities may not be the same as the schools priorities.
As a fan, my priority is win win win.
But the school and the program has to have development of young men as their top priority. They want these guys to go out into the world and represent RPI in the best light no matter what field they go into.
As for the hockey program, the more players they can get into the pro ranks, gives us the best chance to recruit similar type players. This should give us the best chance to appease the fans.
However, for whatever reason, this coach has not (in my opinion) gotten the best out of the talent that he and his assistants brought to this school. Hence, the fans want more.
I believe that he got his extensions, because he is fulfilling the schools priorities. I sure wish he would figure out what he is doing wrong behind the bench and start fulfilling some of the fans priorities.

Re: RPI Offseason Thread: 7 Months of Drivel

While I understand and sympathize with our frustration at not winning more post-season ECAC playoff series, no one has yet proposed a reasonable alternative.

Pretend for a moment that contract considerations didn't matter: who better is available?

Some of the kvetching on here reminds me of people saying "I hate winter, it is cold and snowy and slushy." Yeah, but is there any realistic alternative besides moving to another part of the country? Not sure that any RPI fan wants to say, "I'm tired of losing in the first round of the ECAC playoffs every year. I"m going to start cheering for BC instead." :p

Ben Barr - knows RPI, how to build a program, hard worker and has some experience beating "You Know Who". He's going to get snapped up soon.

Sounds a lot like the qualities (with some exceptions) used to describe SA 9 years ago. I'm not saying yeah or nay.....just saying.

Agreed.

The day will come when a replacement for Seth Appert will be hired. Might be relatively soon, might not happen for many years.

But whenever that day comes or whoever the replacement is, it is hard to imagine that he could arrive with a more glowing set of recommendations than those with which Appert came.
