Re: RPI Offseason Part II: Mindless Drivel.

Then you should get back at him by mentioning Freakout 2002. ;)

He's only going to be a junior this year, so I don't know how much he knows about games 10 years before his time. I give him **** about last year's playoff series whenever I can.

Greatest games could include the '54 championship, December 4th 1968, Freakout '02, Freakout '05, RPI v Michigan '09...

For three, I would say the '54 and '85 championship games and the 12/4/68 game vs. Cornell. That is based upon significance as the deciding point. The '85 game vs. UMD was a better game that the championship game.

Edit: For the three greatest players, I would go with Frank Chiarelli, Adam Oates, and Bob Brinkworth, comparing them to the competition in their era.

I get that most of the greatest moments in program history were all years ago, but I would like to highlight some recent greats too. That's why I mentioned Black Saturday* and I was thinking about Yorkie for the best players.

The WJC game was greater than the Black Saturday that year.

I honestly didn't see the US Juniors game because I had already left for Christmas, but the 0.2s game-tying goal and beating Union in OT was pretty great, especially after the blown call the night before.

Maybe most of us were used to it because RPI did the exact same thing the year before in the holiday tournament (except lost in OT).

Planners of the Tailgate, if this is still going on, let me know the date. I can get the cake from The Cookie Factory.

Re: RPI Offseason Part II: Mindless Drivel.

I don't know how familiar you all are with Reddit, but in the coming weeks the college hockey sub there will be doing a 59 teams in 59 days series and I'm in charge of the writeup for RPI (template here). I'm up on all things recent about the program but my knowledge of history is limited to a few of our finest moments, and even then my knowledge isn't very deep. For example, I really don't know who the fan base at large would consider our 3 greatest players were. I'm also at a loss for great games; I'm thinking '85 Championship Game and 2010 Black Friday for two of them, but I don't know about a third. Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated either in posts here or if you'd like to email me here. Thanks for your help!

P.S., sorry the template is by a Clarkson fan. I've let him know how much he sucks regularly.

Just so you know about the background of Freakout '02. Clarkson was up 3-0 with about 8 minutes to go in the game. First, a goal from Matt Murley. Then, about two minutes later, another goal was scored. You could feel the energy and it was the loudest I have heard the Field House in a long time, and I haven't heard it quite that loud since. Then, with about a minute left, marc Cavosie tied it at 3 to send it to OT. In Ot, RPI had total control, then, with about 3 minutes left in OT, Carson Butterwick nets a wrister from just beyone the faceoff circles to send the crowd into a frenzy. Great game made sweeter by the fact that it was against Clarkson.

Not to mention, three goal horns became two.

Also it was one of the closed circuit RPI-CCT alum broadcasts. I still can recall a CCT alumna breaking down and crying when it was over. :D

maybe they allow you an "honorable mention" or two?

Chiarelli is in the NCAA record book for most points per game, season (4.39), most goals per game, season (3.06) and most goals per game, career (1.94). Still unsurpassed almost 60 years later.

and Adam Oates? well, he was Adam Oates.....

only 14 teams have 2 or more men's division I NCAA titles, and so the two title-winning games pretty much "have to" be on the list, especially the 1954 one which was so unexpected.

The NHL version has had 5 players with honorable mentions for each team. Since RPI started playing hockey before most NHL franchises, I could probably get away with 5+honorable mentions.
