Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2011 Part II: The Bryce is Right

NHL Central Scouting released its "watch list" for the 2012 draft, no RPI recruits are listed and although RPI looks to be set in goal for the forseeable future a couple goaltenders that have been linked to RPI at one point are: Daniel Altshuller made the B list and Dalton Izyk is on the C list.

Hockey's Future Winnipeg Jets draft review:

http://www.hockeysfuture.com/articles/13170/winnipeg_jets2011_draft_review/

Jason Kasdorf, G - Portage Terriers (MJHL)
6th round, 157th overall
Height: 6'3 Weight: 178 lbs

Just when the excitement over the return of the Jets to the draft table was beginning to wane, the selection of a home-town hero in the sixth round blew the roof off the Jets draft party. The backstop to the Manitoba Junior Hockey League champion Portage Terriers, Kasdorf was one of many reclaimed Jets fans who filled the Xcel Center to share their pride in returning to the NHL brotherhood. Ranked 10th amongst North American Goalies by NHL Central Scouting, Kasdorf was no token Manitoban selected to please the fans however. The 6'3 netminder has the size that NHL scouts covet amongst goalies and showed a fierce competitive drive during the Terriers playoff run. Committed to RPI's hockey program next season, Kasdorf will benefit from playing behind a stingy defense that was amongst the toughest in the ECAC to score against.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2011 Part II: The Bryce is Right

I think they overstate the effectiveness of our defense - York was absolutely the rock of the defensive effort last year, not the blue line.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2011 Part II: The Bryce is Right

But we probably wouldn't have gotten Leonard.

Thoughts on the difference? My initial gut instinct is that it's kind of a wash since they both have a lot of potential. Leonard's bigger, right?

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2011 Part II: The Bryce is Right

I took a peek at the Northeastern thread and saw an article posted from USHR that said they've reached out to Keith Allain and Bob Gaudet as possible replacements for Greg Cronin at head coach. That would be a big blow to either of those programs at this stage and it could possibly mean that 1/3 of the schools in the ECAC would be starting the season with new head coaches. Dont think ive ever seen this much movement in the coaching ranks in one offseason.

I wonder if VS will keep his commitment.... or will he try and hook up with a different school now.

Yes, Leonard is bigger. Quinn seemed to be more offensive minded, at least when he was playing in Tier 2. If Leonard did assume Quinn's scholarship, I think that we are better off with Leonard.

Last year, it was players bolting late to either the AHL or the CHL (granted this happens, but it seemed like it happened a lot more last year). This year, it's a coaching carousel. What's next year's gimmick?

My feeling is that VS wanted to play as much as possible vs. BU, so this won't affect anything.

I think theres a couple threads floating around about it already. ;)

Agree-our defense was at times extremely good. But also at times they became either inconsistent or tentative in their decisions. North Dakota probably took advantage of that tentativeness the best in the second period of our NCAA tournament game. I suspect this coming year we will show less of that and be able to handle some of the better teams a little better. But you hit it on the head that last year our fortunes were distictly tied to York-when he was good;, so were we.

What do you think we will see for defense pairings?

I'd imagine something like:

Bailen-Leonard
Bergin-Leboeuf
Dolan-Koudys

with Curadi rotating in to play with Bailen and Bergin.

I certainly wouldn't mind having Leboeuf, Koudys, Curadi, and Leonard all on the bench on any given night. Bergin and Dolan aren't exactly shrimps themselves, and Bailen... well, he's an All-American, come on.

Really like the pairings you listed. I would just have to get Curadi as much ice time as possible rotating him into that scheme. I really love the defense we will be putting on the ice next year but wish we had an 8th name to plug in. What looks good on paper can suddenly present a big problem with any sort of injury.

With those guys on the bench all at the same time-things will get a little cramped. Might have to lengthen the bench a yard or so.:)

I'm not entirely sold on benching Koudys, given he's a 5th rounder. Yes, I do recall that Jensen was also drafted and sported Armani for a while, so it's not a lock. Heck, it's never a lock, and I've seen Coach pine a captain before (Ornelas at Lynah). Unless Guy makes some improvements in the off, I'm in complete agreement with you on the other three names.

If they all stay healthy, what do you think are the chances of us seeing 7 D setups this year?

I don't see it happening unless we have a lot of injuries up front.

Edit: Besides for an exhibition game where we can dress extras.

Interesting thought. Depends on how SA sees this team. If the offense clicks right away and we can find the net frequently, I see us dressing 6 D all the time. If, on the other hand, we start the season offensively challenged for some reason, perhaps SA will play to the strength of dressing 7 D. This is going to be a year where we need SA to show that he is as good a game time coach as he is a recruiting coach. I have faith that he will do the job well.

This is a really interesting exercise.I would surmise NHL draft aside that Koudys is a top 4 defensemen based on size talent and PT last year...in fact I would put him #3 my thoughts are Bailen/Bergin/Koudys then the rest are a toss up.Leonard & Curadi are an unknown...Leboeuf is IMO is a project...and Dolan is a little undersized for the position which gives us 2 undersized D-men which means a little less flexability. So I suspect a lot of mixing and matching in the beginning to see if there is any chemistry with different pairings. If I was forced to put it down on paper this minute it would look like this:

Koudys - Bailen
Bergin - Leonard
Dolan/Leboeuf/Curadi

Like I said there will most likely be alot of mixing and matching and situational pairings ie: Bergin - Bailen on the PP w/Koudys seeing significant PP time....Bergin - Koudys as a shut down pairing against a top line ets...etc...etc....we shall see but I don't see any No Brainer pairings...how returning & incoming players developed over the off season is going to have alot to do w/it...JMO

In my opinion 1 of our defensemen need to have a break-out year and my #1 canidate is Mike Bergin...Mike has been a good D-man and sometimes a great D-man w/above average ability and offensive skills...if he can be consistantly great we will be on our way !!!
