two periods in the books, the engineers have a big hole to dig themselves out of.
They can still win this game, but they have to really pick it up.
Have there been any hits in this game? :(

A few years ago they changed the rule when on the power play.

Previously, the existing power play continued and the delayed penalty was ignored. Now the existing power play ends and the delayed penalty starts. This way the guilty team is actually assessed for both penalties and the other team gets more time.

It appears this year we are a much improved powerplay team-but not a very good short handed defensive team

And yet, if it's done at even strength, the penalty isn't assessed?

That's moronic. Either assess them all the time, or don't. The delay of the delayed penalty is a bonus for the team drawing the upcoming power play.

I think the logic behind it follows with the "the penalty to expire first gets removed" rule when a team has multiple players in the box. Technically, the penalty to the player already in the box would expire before the delayed penalty, so the existing penalty expires and the delayed penalty is assessed.

In the even strength case, the delayed penalty gets wiped out because it would be the first-expiring penalty.
