RPI Hockey 2019 - 2020 Part III: Destination: Lake Placid (and Beyond)!!

Re: RPI Hockey 2019 - 2020 Part III: Destination: Lake Placid (and Beyond)!!

This generation is used to self-developed content. RPI should set up a site so that fans that are watching the game can submit support videos to play on the scoreboard during breaks in the action. If we can't cheer on Owen Savory in person perhaps a freshman (do they still torture the RAs in the freshman dorms by playing hallway hockey with tennis balls like we did?) could submit a video mimicking his casual technique while his dorm mates cheer him on. How about a "Go red" "Go white" cheer by opposing dorms across one of the residential quads? A video from the band with the fight song as they take the ice or celebrate a goal would be appropriate. Other varsity teams could make their own support videos. The possibilities are endless. If we can't have real fans, then import virtual fans that let the boys know the school, alums and community are with them.

I thought that the students are on spring break.

Brilliant. Quoted for signal boost.

Exactly!!! This makes too much sense. Maybe you should get into politics some day?

I've got two words that will make RPI look sillier than they usually do: Iona College. New Rochelle is ground zero for COVID-19 in NYS, and they've done nothing on this level just yet.

Re: RPI Hockey 2019 - 2020 Part III: Destination: Lake Placid (and Beyond)!!

Multiple universities have cancelled all of their in-person classes, switching to a 100% online model for the rest of the term. So yes, there is a very real possibility that classes get cancelled if there is a confirmed case on campus.

As for playing the games without spectators, yes it sucks immensely, but I imagine we're going to be the first among many to do this in the coming weeks, so don't get to jumpy to blame this on the RPI admin. There have even been suggestions that the Sharks play their upcoming home games in an empty arena.

This is absolutely the right thing to do. Anyone exposed can then pass that on to anyone they come in contact with. Imagine a kid gets exposed at the game then passes it on to his grand parents who pass it on at the senior center. This is the only way to slow the spread. But....The NCAA, the ECAC, and RPI could all do the right thing and make it available either on TV or on line for free. I'd gladly donate my tickets to that cause. The other thing I think should happen is Shirley should go and sit all alone in her box. To every game in the series. Face it, she won't have anything else to do!

Then please stay isolated in your house until this is over. Close the malls, the restaurants, the grocery markets, the casinos. Joke.

Good point. That's a complicating factor, but not insurmountable. The spring sports teams are all playing down south this week so they could easily generate support videos. Each fraternity and sorority probably has a cluster of students in Panama City, Daytona or somewhere down south that could record something. It's not as if every college student in America doesn't have a good quality video camera in the form of an iPhone or Galaxy readily available. The band might be a little trickier but I'll bet they have videos of the fight song and alma mater. Maybe a few could add a voice-over cheer at the end. Some of the more exuberant locals might be willing to pitch in. If nothing else, perhaps we could gather 50 people to tailgate and watch the game in the lobby with live chants and the fight song as needed. Hell, if one of the locals can bring a TV, I've got the Fire Stick pre-loaded with my ESPN+ subscription.

Quoted for truth.

Re: RPI Hockey 2019 - 2020 Part III: Destination: Lake Placid (and Beyond)!!

Judging by the turnout in New Haven, there appears to be an unofficial “stay home” rule in place.

So when a vaccine comes out and is offered, make sure you refuse it. Wouldn't want you to catch "a joke".

What the hell are you talking about? Are you staying in your home? Are all other public gatherings or any for that matter being shut down in our area? Were there high school bb games in Glens Falls last night with fans allowed? Not sure what that has to do with refusing a vaccine.

I appreciate your passion John. I believe in attend at your own risk too but... something tells me the virus is much more widely spread than we are learning of officially. Northern Italy is at a standstill. NY might not be that far behind.

It's not the students they are protecting here. It is the professors and the elderly. It stinks but it might be the best policy.

I apologize for the implication. Take a look at the situation in Italy. Not doing things like what RPI is doing could result in a similar outcome. It may seem like overreaction to what seems like a controlled situation. But the whole idea is to keep things here from becoming what happened in China or Italy. Let’s all remember this is a unique situation (it could happen again unfortunately) but in the bigger scheme of things, doing things like RPI is doing is a small price to pay. The other sports should be doing what RPI is doing. Do we want to take the chance that could result in someone who isn’t even a hockey fan getting exposed, sick, or possibly dying?

Re: RPI Hockey 2019 - 2020 Part III: Destination: Lake Placid (and Beyond)!!

25 and JM. I get it but I don't see the rest of the country or state seeing it this way. SARS, Swine Flu, bad strains of seasonal flu and others have been extremely serious in our past. Social media and the insane hunger of attention from mainstream media have us all on edge. Where do we draw the line on what we can and cannot attend? IMO the games should be open to the public and if you don't want to go, don't go. No different than attending a shopping mall, restaurant, or any other public gatherings. Siena had 7,000 people at their game last week and?????? I will respectfully disagree on stopping the world due to a flu strain.

Shot #52 on goal ends it for Yale over Union 2-1

Re: RPI Hockey 2019 - 2020 Part III: Destination: Lake Placid (and Beyond)!!

Union lost 2-1 in 2OT after having their own game winning goal overturned on the ice and then upheld on a very long review.
