Re: RPI Hockey 2019 - 2020: Nordic Combined

Just looked at our scoring over the past 2 decades. The only time we scored as many as 17 goals in the first 4 games I believe was the 2004-2005 season (15 years ago) and the last time we scored more than 17 was the 2001-2001 season - a total of 19 goals (18 years ago). Of course much of this may be dependent upon the competition and this year that may not stack up well against our usual first 4 opponents. Not an absolute comparison but some years like 2011-2012 it took us until our 15th game to score our 17th goal.
Although this may all be comparing apples to potatoes, still nice to see a bit of offensive explosion early in the season.

And our women's team is not on track to come close to scoring 17 goals during the entire season. :(

The most encouraging part of scoring 17 goals this early is that Zieky, Gornall and Hallbauer have not yet contributed.

Zieky has 2 goals in the first 4 games. I’m not sure why you say he i hasn’t contributed. As for Gornall he had 1 goal in 21 games last year. I’m not sure what level of contribution your expecting from him.

I watch Gornall carefully. My kind of player. He is always in the middle of everything and works his behind off every shift. Makes an impact and not afraid to do the dirty work. Give me a couple more like him anytime. Zieky is streaky (like the way that sounds!) and can just get hot quickly. Another that can play on my team. Really like the 2 K's on defense and can't wait to see them stay for 4 years and solidify this defense. Potential is for us to be much better than the last couple years. Not 1985 better, but better none the less.

A bit early for me to make much out of the fact that we have scored 17 in the first four games but the last two years we scored overall 69 and 73 total. Those were the lowest offensive outputs since that notorious season (so well remembered by you and me) of 1965-1966. Although I am a believer that defense wins hockey games in the NCAA, and that if we can keep our GAA close to 2 we should have a fairly successful season, there is no doubt that you simply have to score some goals. In the recent past it seemed like we need to at least total 100+ over the season to have any chance for an above .500 record. I am not yet convinced we have the offense to maintain this pace of 4+ goals per game, but if we can just even score 3 it would be a marked improvement from what we have seen the past couple season.
You are correct of course that the ladies really need to get some offense going to compete in any games at all.

last night was fun to watch don't get me wrong but if we play like that against good teams it's going to be a long year it was very much like a pond hockey game and Canisius had Savory beat dead to rights 3 times on A+ chances and hit the post then mucked up a 2 on 0 so we need some tightening up to say the least but hey 7 goals is 7 goals I'll take that as a good sign. Another good sign is Babichuck looks to be as advertised good skater good hands good decisions that's really good news...Go Red !

Re: RPI Hockey 2019 - 2020: Nordic Combined

Some stats for reference:
4.25 GPG (t-7th in the country)
40% PP (2nd in the country)
91.67% PK (14th in the country)
The killer is 3.75 GAPG which is 5th to last in the country (56th)
There's a lot of good things to be excited about but that defense is very worrisome. On the brightside, Savory had a big game last night, and I think he has shaken off the rust. He keeps playing like that, and we get more structured on D: we're looking at a very good team.

Re: RPI Hockey 2019 - 2020: Nordic Combined

This could be the first time in about a decade that RPI will probably be favored against Union. Of course that means little in what is regarded as a rivalry game.

Re: RPI Hockey 2019 - 2020: Nordic Combined

Was Mike Sadeghpour at one or both of the games?
Was Shirley?

Re: RPI Hockey 2019 - 2020: Nordic Combined

Shirley was there on Saturday and in all likelihood Sadeghpour was up in her throne room also.
Funniest thing was it was parents weekend and while introducing the parents and other family members of the prayers who were present, they also introduced Shirley who received a chorus of.boos. A bit of poor taste, but understandable.

Re: RPI Hockey 2019 - 2020: Nordic Combined

Shirley and the AD should be booed every second they can be. I would also like to see some fire smith signs if we don't sweep union

The "Fire Smith" angle is ridiculous. First of all, it's early in a season in which we've shown the ability to compete with two HE teams, one very good and the other talented but young so it will probably finish in the middle of the pack. Second, as long as Smith's teams show year over year improvement - and so far they have - he will be here and I will support him. If we split with Union, which although I disagree was picked to finish ahead of us by both the media and the coaches, to start the season 3-3, I would consider any "fan" that would bring a "Fire Smith" sign to be a delusional distraction that isn't helping the program. Frankly, even if we were swept, I don't think it would do anyone any good to start calling for a change this early in the season. Let it play out and, if we aren't seeing a better team down the stretch then we can talk about the future. Remember that Seth's worst season (until his last one) was in his third year (getting worse each year), before bouncing back for a couple of winning seasons in years 4 and 5. We don't have a history of quick changes.

My question is whether Smith will split the goaltending duties this weekend or go with Savory as #1. I'm a little torn on this one as I think Marshall played a good game when I saw him in Hartford and he's definitely got the potential to be a #1 in this league. I'd like to see him get a shot and, as far as I know, he was a good teammate when he lost his job last season and stuck around to compete this season. However, I think Savory will be #1 and it may be best to establish that early so the team can continue to build confidence and develop a well-defined style of play.

"Fire Smith signs"............ a wee bit harsh?? No??

Things seem to be much improved as a whole, lots of work to do for sure. But from what I am seeing and hearing , the culture on/off ice is like night and day compared to previous years. And in my opinion, a more cohesive unit/product on the ice that should lead to more "W's". Really like the pp gaining traction and I think Savory will log major minutes moving forward. Burgess hopefully teased us with what may be in store rest of season, and the fact that multiple guys are putting up points is encouraging.

Defensively, the young dmen need to, and i think will, figure out the college pace/style. Babichuk worries me from a defensive stand point, as he looks very uneasy getting "gritty" when he needs to and runs around aimlessly at times. Offensive talent, yes, but guessing he had little defensive responsibility in his Jr days (USHL guys seem to be a bit more responsible defensively coming in). The sophomore class of dmen is pretty darn solid, and should be a strength for the years to come.

Forwards need to tighten their role in defensive end and make responsible decisions in neutral zone to make sure pucks enter O zone when they can. But there seems to be a "we" mentality vs "me" mentality , as it may have been in past. That is a good sign.

Overall I am encouraged from what I see, hope it continues to build with two good games against Union. DS and staff has done a nice job in building a foundation, now its time to add to it.

PS...... would have like to have seen what may have happened with Saturday's lineup vs UCONN on Friday.

I agree that Marshall has played well enough to warrant future time in net, but it won't matter who Smith runs out there if we can't stop the fire wagon breaks we've been allowing.... these 4 and 5 goal games from RPI likely will dry up once we get into the meat of ECAC play. I read but did not completely understand Smith's post game comments about how Canisius' odd man breaks were a result of us doing good things in their zone. He didn't seem to say that it was because our d-men were pinching and pushing the offensive play....I'll have to go back attempt to understand it....I was tired last night. :)

Re: RPI Hockey 2019 - 2020: Nordic Combined

I remember 1965-1966. I was encouraged because I could go watch the freshman team do very well with Watsom Scammel Law Mitchell Ingram.
