What a difference a week makes! What happened? I was hoping last weekend laid the foundation for a solid RPI team capable of competing against the elite of the ECAC. Now I don't know what to think? A struggling SLU team comes at a perfect time.

My guess is immaturity and/or lack of confidence. We did a lot of the right things in the 1st, but then a no-goal call didn't go our way, we got scored on, had an injury, and just went back to where we were last year in terms of play style. Seemed like a similar problem in the 2nd Union game, as I wasn't impressed with our 3rd period there. Lesson to be learned this time is to, as QAnon puts it, "trust the plan". Coach Smith seems to have the tools to help set up the team for success, and from what we've seen with the effects of practice, has the team ready. At the end of the day, it's up to the players to execute. Have confidence in the plan, consistently work towards a great team effort, and win lose or tie, we'll play well.

One small change on the blueline tonight as Erik Burgdoerfer draws into the line-up for the first time this season. Burgdoerfer has split his previous 4 NHL games between the Sens and Sabres and he gets an opportunity to face his old squad today. RPI football wins 27-20 and earns a berth in the tournament. Ralph must have shown up for the 2nd half because we almost blew it. :p

This is a game we should have won going away by 30 points. We just kept shooting ourselves in the foot. Took penalties on plays in which we scored and got called back. Had to settle for field goal after a first and goal from the 2 yard line. SLU lost their kicker early in the game and could not go for field goals or PAT's. But SLU was pass crazy throwing on every down and we just kept playing a rope a dope prevent pass defense and giving them every short pass up and down the files. if Union was watching this, they will pass 60+ times next week as we just could not stop anything.
But a win is a win and we are now undefeated at 8-0 and 4-0 in the Liberty League. This guarantees we get an NCAA bid as we have clinched the LL title. If we win next week, we could host a first round NCAA game!

I’m so glad that both Coach and Jacob talked about Donovan Ott. I thought he played an incredible game. I wish he had better wheels (his breakaway seemed in slow motion) but the kid has great heart and instincts. The near goal and the puck possession play to kill the clock at the end were obvious, but the screen on Jacob’s goal was the real game winner. He came away from the net to fetch the puck at the bottom of the circle, got the puck back up top and then went right back to the net. When Hayhurst released his shot all the goalie could see was a red mass from the backside of Donovan’s pants. I predicted a few weeks ago that he and Burgess among the returnees had to make the next step up if we are to have significant improvement this season. If he keeps making those kind of plays I’m going to have a new favorite player.

It looks like they get better every game. There appears to be set plays in the offensive zone, and they're winning more faceoffs.

Also notice the forwards busting hump back checking which is great to see. Just more flow to their game over the past 2 weeks and the defense is more mobile, especially # 28, Hellabauer. Hopefully it continues next weekend on the road.

I fell asleep early late than usual last night anticipating the changing of the clock back an hour to standard time. Had a wonderful dream that the men's RPI hockey team was in first place in the ECAC. I got up at my usual time 5AM thanks to our furry four legged alarm clock and jumped into the shower only to realize that i had not slept at all and it wasn't a dream. it may be very early in the season but what a nice feeling to have!!!

P.S.-Winning and controlling face offs and exerting offensive pressure by fore checking has already done wonders so far!!

RPI football moves up one slot to #14. At this time of year never expect much movement in those rankings until the playoffs start so that may well be the highest we get. A win over Union next weekend goes a long way towards keeping us at home for the first round of the NCAA playoffs and obviously a much better seeding. I believe this is the first time we have made the playoffs in two consecutive years. Becoming a nice habit!!

And very hard to believe considering the football team's recent history when I arrived in 1964.
