Quinnipiac split the duties, no one got a shutout (not even Kielly, as Canisius got one). Josh Dunne from CCT almost assuredly RotW. The case could certainly be made for Marshall with two wins, but the save percentage on Friday might hurt him.

A great weekend for RPI hockey. Winning can be contagious. If Burgess and Wiffen start to score, we can compete with anyone in the ECAC.
And for all of those who thought this would be a losing weekend (me included) this is why we play the games.

I'll take your word for it. It's the first time he's had a major, so there aren't going to be any mandated suspensions above and beyond the one game, but with the league you never know, especially since the victim was the darlings of the league.

I was at the game and saw the replay. The player he hit was turning and actually started to fall as he went to the boards. Was a lot of noise but wasn’t an actual blatant hit from behind. Polino looked Ike he was trying to wrap his arms around him. As for the 5 min and DQ seems a little much to me considering he was skating off the ice before the trainer got to him and more importantly he never misses a shift. I always though 5 min majors were five for intent to injure and the DQ was meant to emphasis that point. That wasn’t the case with that play. They were both going after the puck and #5 should have some accountability IMO since it looks like he’s turning.

5. Winless Rensselaer sweeps undefeated No. 11 Union

This home-and-home series looked like a serious mismatch before the weekend started. The Union Dutchmen were 3-0-1, including a road sweep of then-No. 12 Northeastern. Rensselaer, on the other hand, had lost all three of its contests.

A mismatch on paper.

Those expectations lasted for about 31 minutes. As expected, Union jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead, but Rensselaer had it tied up by halfway through the second and added two more in the third to take a lead it would not surrender.

One night later, the Engineers kept rolling, scoring twice in both the first and second periods to take a 4-0 lead en route to a 4-2 win.

The Rensselaer penalty kill was pivotal, holding Union off the scoreboard in 13-of-14 power plays.

Also to consider as part of the success. Although still losing far too many face offs, RPI was able to be successful on many that i would consider the important face offs. Those deep in the zone when short handed. Not only winning the face off, but then controlling the puck long enough to get it out of the zone far enough to reset and reorganize defensively. It gave Marshall just a bit more time to get himself set into his comfortable position and when he does that, and is given a chance to see the puck, he is a pretty tough boy to beat.
Another thing that was also nice to see was our defensive pairings getting to the puck a bit more quickly, making a decision slightly faster and then moving the puck up ice instead of freezing it against the boards and allowing the fore check to send 2 or 3 in deep to harass. Lots of little fundamental things done right made for a much more successful weekend.
Will obviously need to do more of this next weekend and prove ourselves against two long time rivals.
