Veteran Boston Herald Bruins writer Stephen Harris died last night after a battle with illness.

Harris, beloved by fans and colleagues alike, first joined the Herald in 1976. He was an authoritative and respected voice in the Boston hockey community.

During his four decades reporting on the Bruins, Harris covered thousands of games, hundreds of playoff contests, several Olympics and multiple Stanley Cup Finals, including the Bruins’ historic march to the Cup in 2011.

Harris is survived by his wife and two sons.

“Steve was a gentleman first and foremost, but also a man who was dedicated to hockey and to the Herald,” Herald sports editor Sean Leahy said. "It’s a devastating loss for us at the Herald, but our hearts are especially broken for his wife, Kathy, and Steve’s two sons.”

The NHL Public Relations department paid tribute to Harris on its Twitter account today.

“Hockey has lost a journalistic pillar, Steve Harris,” officials wrote. “Steve spent the last four decades serving Boston fans with dogged reporting, deft writing and determination to get the story right.”

Sad news indeed. Sympathies to the survivors.
