Re: RPI Hockey 2016 - 2017: Here we go again! I hope it's a fun ride.

The fact that RPI isn't a hockey factory and they can't afford to throw money around.

true, but what I'm wondering is if there is a tipping point somewhere along this path where alumni discontent, fan base erosion/shrinking attendance, and prestige of the school's signature athletic program reach a point where the administration is compelled to make a change in less than the remaining four seasons on Appert's contract. Maybe that point is the end of this season, maybe the end of next season. Maybe alums pass the hat and cover the cost of the buyout. We can say it will never happen no matter what, but on the other hand the AD is a veteran administrator who has shown in the past he does not tolerate losing, alums are getting fed up with the direction of the program, and it is the school's best known program with a strong and proud tradition (nothing against football, golf, soccer, hoops, swimming, lax, track and other programs - many of these teams and athletes have been outstanding in their own right). Really wish things were going better for everyone - players, coaches, fans.

There is more talent on this team than credit is being given. No one is more disappointed in how this season is playing out than the players themselves. As fans, realize that these young men have feelings and are doing what they can to win.

Two weeks ago, I would have agreed with everything that you said.
But the last three games have been played with no emotion, no leadership (coaches or players) no concern for each other. No TEAM.
I am sure that you are right about the talent, but they just seem to be uninterested, and no one has stepped up to fix it.

More colleges are funding coaching through targeted endowments - mainly football, but I believe BC, Harvard and even D3 Colby have endowments for the hockey coaches.

Clarkson's hockey coach is paid by the Leonard S Ceglarski Endowed Chair.

It is 2021, thanks Colonel. As for the turnover, several coaches have been with their respective teams longer, a few of them in this league alone.

That wasn't my point. Our entire recruiting and teaching staff (Appert, Vines and Graham) is unchanged. That's pretty rare for a seven year period. If stability was gong to get us somewhere it would have happened by now. Something has to change and if it can't be the head coach, then.......

Apparently Seth, or the school, doesn't want us to know what he is thinking either as the pre-game and post-game videos seem to have stopped being posted.

It's the same buzz words anyway; you could probably re-enact it.

Hasn't been a video posted since after the final Ohio state game. In the past hasn't there been a weekend preview video posted? I didn't expect one for ASU but the last 2 weekends have been league play and nothing.

Rock bottom missed extra point
How is YGC (your great coach) gonna get a new goalie for next year

If every team going forward plays us short handed perhaps we can win another game...

Re: RPI Hockey 2016 - 2017: Here we go again! I hope it's a fun ride.

Watched part of the Brown/RPI game and the RPI players all looked a bit dazed out there, never really sure of their passes and unsure where the other guys are on the ice. I don't know if it's lack of confidence or something else, but I was very surprised. Brown players looked a bit better as a team but the quality of their passes really let them down. I missed the first period so maybe I missed the good parts. The final score is a bit steep considering the teams seemed to be a good match for each other overall. On the brighter side for RPI, 2 for 3 on the PP and only 3 penalties (not counting the last one).
Hope Hackett is ok, he is a strong asset.

Does not tolerate losing? Explain what level of losing? There always is a tipping point, much depends on alums in this regard. Can also depend on a bold AD and getting the funding needed if that is the case.

Can anyone speak to the level of funding the D1 teams get?

I don't claim to know what is going on but the Engineers that played us earlier this year were a very very good hockey team and were rightfully picked to finish in the top half of the league by everyone. You don't deserve this.

Thank you for your kind words.

I don't know what's going on, either.

I saw RPI play a game last week against a Princeton team which has now won four games in the last three weeks against teams ranked in the top 10 at the time of the games. And RPI should have beaten them.

I believe there is enough talent on this team to have a much better record than they do.

But right now, that record is 3-16-1 with 15 games left in the regular season, and I can't point to a single one of those 15 and say that I expect RPI to win it.

It is not inconceivable that RPI could lose all 15 of those games, plus two more in a first-round playoff series against the fifth place team, and finish the year with a 21 game losing streak for a final record of 3-33-1.

That, of course, is not what I want to see.

But if it does come to pass, I would expect Seth Appert to resign. I have a hard time imagining that he would want to put himself through four more years of this, no matter how much money his contract might guarantee.

Coaches don't quit after bad years. I also don't expect he will be fired, even though this will be his third 20plus loss season.

All the talk about past and present ADs making this kind of decision is naive. Extending a coach's contract for 7 years and eating 4 years of a contract to move a coach out are decisions most often made by
The president, especially this president. She will have the final say, so I expect at least one or two more seasons with this head coach.

I don't think Shirley takes enough interest in athletics to have even thought about offering a contract extension, much less one for 7 years, without it having been proposed and heavily sold by the colonel. Why he thought it was necessary for a coach whose record to that point was nearly 40 games under .500 is a mystery.
