Re: RPI Hockey 2016 - 2017: Here we go again! I hope it's a fun ride.

Based on what I've seen in the recruit threads, I wouldn't say we haven't had scorers. Haggerty, Zalewski, Laliberté, and Nanne come to mind. Is the team using that talent to the best of its potential? Is it being harnessed, rather than hindered, when taking general team process into account?

Neither Haggs ( http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=45402 ) or Lou ( http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=150969 ) were scorers before getting here. The only F’s on the current Roster (sans Burgess) who were GOAL scorers prior were; Jespar, Bourbs & Wiffen, all the others who had respectable point totals (all their Jr. Teams included) were mainly by assists.

Thanks. When I looked yesterday I was looking for a story mentioning the goalies in the headline, not one about the OSU game. It was interesting to hear the discussion about our previous games vs. OSU. There was no mention of the fourth game which we played vs. OSU which we call an exhibition and they call a real game (8-5 RPI win).

I have seen all of those players in person and on RPITV over their years at RPI. Laliberte was the biggest disappointment. Nanne is not far behind. Haggs and Zalewski were fun to watch and did a good job. But they were not Pirri or D'Amigo or Cavosie or Tapper. Those are the kind of scorers we are going to need if we want to get to the next level.

Fair enough of a clarification on specific names. We're still seeing the same points from the second half of what you quoted occurring, though. How long did it take Bourbonnais to finally "find his stride" (better late than never, but from the game I saw of him in Juniors, he was benched the first period and I hardly noticed him for the rest, so I wasn't expecting much)? Wiffen I might give a pass because we've only seen a few games out of him and there's been production there thus far. Öhrwall is definitely a good point as well; haven't seen much from him. Granted, Polacek's impact wasn't really noticed until his junior year (and he came from HS), so there may be a learning curve we're not taking into account (although Cullen was certainly an impact player his frosh year, as were Pirri and D'Amigo). It just comes down to what do we expect, especially considering we are still following a "youth" league (albeit only one step below professional)?

So for scorers you name Pirri (11 goals) D'Amigo(10 goals) Cavosie (12 goals) Tapper (14 goals) as the type of players needed to take RPI to the next level. This isn't a lot of goals. Melanson scored 9 goals his freshman year, the same number of goals as Adam Oates in his freshman year. Drew has already equaled his goal out put from an injury plagued sophomore season. He's on pace for 15 goals. Tironese is still recovering from not one but 2 shoulder surgeries. He will put up at least 15 goals this season. Wiffen will get his fair share as will Hayhurst and Polino. I don't think goal scoring is the problem. What's letting this team down right now is goaltending and solid defensive play in front of the goaltender. It's 11 games in with at least 25 more to go. The next 5 games will give this team a chance to regroup against Non Conference opponents. It's early to hit the panic button. It's way to early to suggest this team won't make the NCAA's . All it takes is a few weekend series and then anything can happen.

Sorry for being a bit late responding to Ralph's post.

So it's going to be the ...eers against the ...eers (Engin... vs. Privat...) at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.

Last time RPI played in Philadelphia, I was there. It was 1972, and RPI beat Drexel, 9-7.

I remember that RPI tried a fake field goal and the holder, who was going to take the snap and run with the ball, knelt down on the right side of the kicker, forgetting that our kicker was left-footed. The heck of it was, even though the kicker had already attempted a field goal (which he made) and an extra point(which he missed), Drexel didn't remember that the kicker was left-footed, either, and they were completely fooled. The holder took the snap and sailed around right end free and clear - only to have the play called back on a penalty.

Franklin Field is an ancient relic, but it's a big stadium. It was once the home field of the last Philadelphia Eagles team to win the NFL championship. I'm afraid, however, that our team is likely to set a school record for largest number of empty seats ever to see an RPI sporting event. :o

25 goals in 11 games, or 2.27 goals/game (51st of 60 D-1 teams) makes me think goal scoring is a problem. I hope your prediction about the balanced scoring attack comes true. They need it.

It is hard to believe that a D-3 football game between two mediocre teams having no connection to Philadelphia is going to attract a lot of interest.

I'm mildly interested, NY Maritime alum here and one of my kids is an RPI alum.. I agree with you though Ralph, unless you have some connections to the schools this will not drum up that much interest.

In order to have a balanced scoring attack, more than one player needs to shoot the puck. In order to score by committee, more than one player needs to shoot the puck. If you look at RPI's attack, there are always at least four passes (assuming no turnover), and only one person (usually a D-man, just take a look at who's out there and you can predict who it is) is ever taking the shot. And this is only looking at it from what I see at games; I'm not privileged to viewing training. If I can figure this out, opposing coaches can (and have) figure this out. Am I advocating forcing the situation with bad shots? No. It is clear that there are open opportunities as the defenders move in to close up the lanes, so why not take them?

RF, I am not talking about the freshmen. By now, we should be getting goals from Liljegren and Nanne on a regular basis. They are not producing. I know that we have potential with Wiffen and Tironese. Boubonnais has been ok. But we are getting 2.5 goals a game, and that isn't going to win many games.
As for the defense, I think that there is a lot of potential there also. As I said in an earlier post, I will wait until January before I start to panic.
