Re: RPI Hockey 2016 - 2017: Here we go again! I hope it's a fun ride.

OK, so what have we learned about this team thus far...

Attack (including PP): OK, so there was some improvement across the weekend. We finally figured out that we need to shoot the puck and get some movement in order to open the lanes. So their goalie made a lot of saves; that's going to happen. Yes you have to put some deception in to get him moving as well, but there's a balance, because too many moves gives your opponent an upper hand while you waste a lot of energy. I can understand wanting to make some passes, but hopefully we're not passing for the sake of passing.
Defend (including PK, although that really was solid): Not too bad, also had some growing pains but started to improve. Biggest hole I see is the team still depends WAY too much on the goalie. OK, so they had some blocked shots, that's all well and good. Still need to make sure we take care of the puck when we actually get a chance with it in the corner; two goals were given up by turnovers deep in our own end on Saturday, and I don't care if you have Dominik Hasek, you're not going to stop those when that happens.
Conditioning: Tank was empty in the third period. You want to blame it on the early season? I can buy that somewhat. They get 8 hours a week (2-a-day) from the start of the academic year until the official start of the season; how much of that is weight room, and how much is conditioning? Obviously we won't know because the D-I bylaws prohibit publishing that sort of info, but something to keep in mind. Hopefully we some improvement in this category, because we have a VERY LONG history of dreaded third periods, and this is the only thing I can chalk it up to.

Hopefully we can salvage a 2-3 start, otherwise this could be a long year.

I'm sure Niagara and RIT share your sentiment but you're right it is what it is. RIT gave up the AHC belt lest night spectacularly losing 6-5 after being up 5-1. Hope to be in Troy for the RPI - RIT tilt in a couple of weeks.

Team was out of gas because the same players were being used over and over again. Its not a matter of player conditioning. You can't have the same guys on the Power play and killing penalties and leave other players just sitting on the bench.

One positive from the wknd. was Hayhurst on face-offs. He was 10-6 on Fri. & 13-6 on Sat.

That's certainly a reasonable explanation for what happened, and it's something else we need to adjust to, then. I do recall Appert mentioning, a few years back, that he would be willing to just roll regular line rotations during special teams if things weren't working out. Obviously a little trickier to do on the PK (easily enough controlled by not taking dumb penalties, a minority of those are goal-saving or getting put off balance to point where you hit the goaltender and those will happen), but for the PP, if that many penalties are going to be called, that's something a good bench coach should be able to understand as a possible scenario and not only adjust accordingly in a game, but consider it during training.

Re: RPI Hockey 2016 - 2017: Here we go again! I hope it's a fun ride.

I'm going to shill for our own little fantasy hockey game, RPI Pick To Click again. We only had 6 participants for the first weekend of the season last week (though that may have been partially my fault), which is way down from years past. Luckily no one did insanely well this week, so if you come in now, you don't have much ground to make up.

The game itself is very simple, pick one player from each team in an RPI game (with some limits), and earn points when those players "click". It takes just a couple of minutes each week to make your picks, so there's no real barrier to entry. The game is a lot of fun, and I hope some of you make it over to participate each week.

It's certainly eye opening, but not all the fault can be placed on the stripes. How many times are crowds clamoring for a penalty that was "missed" (whether the ref truly didn't see it, or they're not calling it in the interest of a faster game is irrelevant)? They get what they want, and now they're unhappy? At least 80% of the penalties on both sides are avoidable through a disciplined game where you jockey for position appropriately and play the puck. Sure, penalties are going to happen (asking for a double-clean game is not realistic), and sometimes they have to be taken to save a chance.

At each level, you place emphasis on more and more facets of the game. I'm sure in juniors, midgets, and lower, you see a lot of penalties for ticky-tack things as well. So you clean those up as you learn through the year, and continue to apply it at the next level. If the NCAA is truly going to be a stepping stone to the NHL, and I think we can all admit Major Junior is no longer the only game for that, then we need to nip ticky-tack things in the bud like hooking and tripping (probably the two most common penalties I've seen in the past few years in the college game), as well as the appropriate way to take a face-off.

Anyone have any info on Brady Wiffen's injury? Looks like he left the ice in game 1 last weekend and did not return for game 2.....

Off topic but is anyone watching the show Austin Mathews is putting on? He’s scored all 4 goals for Toronto so far. Still the 3rd period to play!

OTOH Austin Cho has scored one goal so far. :)

And they still lose. Clearly a bust. Trade him for pucks.
